Chaim Potok was raised as an Orthodox Jew in Brooklyn, New York. His father was a Hasid rabbi and his mother was a descendant of the Hasid dynasty. Along with that, he and his four brothers and sisters ended up becoming rabbis or marrying rabbis. For his education, he attended Yeshiva University in New York where he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature. Potok's list of many occupations went from becoming a rabbi to being enlisted in the United States army as a chaplain. To continue, Potok got married on June 8, 1958 to Adena Sara Mosevitzsky and had three children. Sadly, after accomplishing many things in his life, he got brain cancer and died July 23, 2002.

Inspirations for the Novel

Chaim Potok was inspired through the works of other writers he read, such as Ernest Hemingway, Thomas Mann, James Joyce, along with many others. He also used his own life for the inspiration for the setting, which took place in New York, where he grew up. Considering he was raised as an Orthodox Jew and had insight on the living as an Orthodox Jew, he was inspired to incorporate it in this novel. Two of the novels that most influenced this piece are Evelyn Waugh's "Brideshead Revisited" and James Joyce's "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man."

Multiple events in Jewish culture led to the creation of The Chosen. World War II and the Holocaust were the central events that shaped The Chosen. The murder of six million Jews brought great sadness to Jews all over the world. This sadness united them as a culture, and even motivated Jews to push toward the creation of a Jewish State. The Holocaust is what motivated David Malter to lead Zionists to the creation of Israel. This event is central to the novel because it took up all of David Malter's time and eventually was a detriment to his health, which greatly affected Reuven's relationship with his father.

Similarities Between Chaim Potok and Characters

The whole novel in general represents the life of Chaim Potok, and it acts almost as an autobiography of his own life. He closely relates to Reuven Malter by him being represented in the novel as an Orthodox Jew; this is a similar point to Chaim Potok because he was also brought up as an Orthodox Jew, so in a way they experienced the same type of childhood. Another similarity between the characters of the story with the author, include the Hirsch Seminary and College, where Danny and Reuven go to college together; this is very similar to Yeshiva University where Potok attends school. Potok and Reuven are the two people who seem to relate the most. Considering Reuven is the narrator, it allows the thought process and actions of Potok to be lived out through Reuven at this time.

Jewish Response

At the time, many people reacted to the publishing of this novel by praising it for the portrayal of the closed Hasidic community, while others thought of it as a symbol of the survival of Judaism. In the novel, Reb Saunder's reaction shows that he thinks that many Jews were killed under God's will and that they must wait for the messiah to rescue them, while David Malter believed that many Jews dying should result in taking action through creating a homeland in Palestine. This shows how the Jews of the real world must have thought in reaction to the parts of the Holocaust that was explained in the novel, where their were differing opinions of the Jews with some reacting in favor and some against what is portrayed. One Jew describes his reaction to reading the Chosen. He explains that he had always tried to stay away from any Jewish book. However, when he finally decided to pick up and read The Chosen, his whole perspective changed and he really related and enjoyed the beautiful story. http://www.tabletmag.com/jewish-arts-and-culture/books/86812/choice

Themes of The Chosen

The chosen contains many very influential themes that help create a complex and layered story plot. One theme is silence as a path to the soul which highlights the way Reuven's father raised him in silence to help him learn more about himself. Another theme is the conflict between Hasidic traditions and American secular modernity which is shown by the internal conflicts Reuven faces with the Hasidic upbringing from his father but also his need to be with the American culture and experience. One final theme is that enemies can become friends and this is displayed when Danny and Reuven were enemies in the beginning when Reuven hit Danny with the baseball and Danny was angry with him but they ended up becoming best friends.
