As I was planning for the new year, I discovered this idea among many that are inspiring new ideas in me. Going to try it this year. It's called Beach Ball Ice Breaker. You get a beach ball and then write questions in permanent marker on the ball. Students then toss the ball and the question on which their right thumb lands is the question they answer. A good way to get to know each other and build a class community. I'm also going to try handshakes as the students enter this year. Some research is showing that it affects student attitude. Not sure if I can personalize each student's handshake, but I'd like to see if it breaks hall mentality and establishes a tone for entering the classroom and acknowledging
each student. We'll see....
