I was astonished that although one might have not experienced something themselves it is still implemented in our genes. One of the exhibited artist's (born sometime around 1970) drawings about slavery made me think of the knowledge, experiences, feelings... that were handed down to me by my ancestors. 
Through teaching English I am frequently reminded that racism and especially white sense of superiority is a topic we need to talk about again and again and again to not let history repeat itself and make the world a better place for everyone. From that moment, for me the most memorable single thing was that when there is no common language, there is no communication or rebelling either. So that´s a way to keep peopled slaved.
 
At the museum I learned so many fact about slavery today! I have somehow (because it hasn´t been close to me personally) been under the impression that slavery was apandoned in Europe and Guadeloupe at the same time (earlier than in USA). The term modern slavery was also new for me, but it´s very descripting.

We talked about work, family, travels and life in Guadeloupe. I discovered that we have same aspirations and worries no matter where we live. It was strange how his thoughts about travelling mirrored our discussions from Tuedsay: he said that he likes travelling because when he is amongst a strange culture, he learns more about himself. 

Memorial ACTe was beautifully constructed and the exhibition was thought-provoking and captivating. I learned a lot about slavery, its history and the lives of slaves in the Caribbean. One of the most depressing facts I learned today was that slavery continues in modern times, we just don’t recognise it as such. I am overwhelmed by the human cruelty, and at the same time I don’t want to lose hope.

Thinking back on national identity, I wonder what kind of a effect does such a painful, disruptive heritage have on the development of national identity. Is there underlying resentment and hatred against the oppressors and their descendants? Interesting and, at the same time, very sad to be able to get close to events that should never have happened. I was very impressed by the moment in the museum when you could see how people were transported by boat from Africa and even hear them breathing.  Unfortunately, events like this will continue to happen to a greater or lesser extent. At the same time, I am in awe of the seemingly deeply rooted hope that people can have.
History, whether it is our personal history, that of our ancestors or that of our fellow human beings, shapes us in our thoughts and actions, means in our awareness of ourselves and our culture. That is why it is important for me to keep certain events and happenings in mind, to bring them to the attention of my students and to discuss them together in the context of new developments and to further develop perspectives on them.

Our visit to the ATCte memorial made me reflect on how important it is to live in Freedom. It seems unbelievable that since the beginning of human history, human beings have committed such atrocities. As teachers we have a responsibility to educate future generations to fight against this injustice.
