Well, if you have a Mac, Garageband is the way to go. It is free, already on your computer, and if you have an iPhone, a standard app. However, if you have a PC and don't want to spend any money, go for the open source software Audacity. It is relatively easy to use  and has almost as many features as Garageband. One of the few drawbacks is it doesn't look that pretty.
