Although INVU is a wearable device, its innovation lies in the development of a new method for completing an in-clinic surveillance test (NST) outside of its traditional setting. I chose this technology because it has applications to my professional and personal life. As a previous labor and delivery nurse for nearly 9 years, I can see the practicality of remote electronic fetal monitoring, specifically non-stress tests. With the capability to simultaneously measure both fetal heart rate and uterine activity, INVU is currently the only FDA-cleared medical device that can complete this task. There are no other similar wearable technologies available for home use. For the patient, it may be easier and more comfortable to have the option to use INVU remotely during scheduled non-stress tests or in the case of possible pre-triage workups under the guidance of their provider. For the providers, the ability to assess their patients’ NSTs without having the patient in the office can save time and reduce clinical workload. The unit I worked on, and its associated clinics, had a very high patient volume. Utilization of remote monitoring can improve the workflow for both staff and patients, resulting in more timely interventions and improved outcomes of care. It can increase patient compliance by reducing barriers to care that would prevent a patient from making it into the office. Many of the patients I treated would travel from all over the surrounding area, sometimes from distances up to 2 hours away. Providing them with the ability to be monitored from home would greatly improve their satisfaction with their care.

I also have personal interests in this technology because I am currently a patient who fits the protocol for use. In my own high-risk pregnancy, I travel to my doctor's office for fetal surveillance procedures twice a week. If I were able to complete my non-stress tests from the comfort of my home, it would reduce travel time and the associated hassle. I will acknowledge, however, that I am not in the typical patient category. I have extensive knowledge of and experience with fetal monitoring. Therefore, I understand better how to use such technology at home, as well as its implications. For patients using INVU, extensive education should be provided so that the technology can be used correctly. It is also essential to provide patient education regarding urgent and emergent conditions of pregnancy. This is necessary so that patients can distinguish scenarios that necessitate in-person assessment.

INVU is a novel, innovative technology that delivers clinically accurate data not available from consumer-grade wearable devices. It has the potential to reduce clinical workload and increase access to care for patients facing barriers with transportation, distance, work schedules, or other issues. I look forward to seeing further research on the potential health benefits and improved outcomes for pregnancies where remote electronic fetal monitoring is used. I believe technological advances such as INVU can improve standards of obstetric care in today's evolving healthcare setting.

My Harmony strength is a relationship-building strength as well and makes me a strong negotiator. I can use this strength to foster conflict resolution among team members.

Empathy is an intuitive sense that allows me to connect more deeply with the other team members. This strength helps me “read the room” and the vibe amongst the other team members, further facilitating my team-management skills.

Applying my Deliberative strength means that I am very thoughtful when it comes to making serious decisions, and I plan for all possibilities. This strength helps my team because I can identify risks and provide perspectives that my team members may not have considered.

When I execute my Consistency strength, I am promoting the idea that policies should be adhered to, and everyone should be treated fairly across the board. In a team setting, this strength helps me to enforce equal treatment for all the members of my team based on guidelines and balance.
