Currently offering a movement class for early childhood learners, I think the students are mostly 3-5 y/o. The structure opens with a BrainDance, moves into dance-alongs, and finishes with a closing dance/ritual.

Personally, I want to offer more creative movement/expression for all age groups. I am not interested in teaching technique in a virtual setting and I want this experience to yes, build self esteem like Joe asked. I think once we can get back in the studio I would looove to teach technique to anyone who is interested in learning.

Swathi mentioned that she also teaches kids, and I see so much value in bringing in forms that are not western.

I am well-versed in developing dance curriculum and would LOVE to write curriculum for SAFEhouse kids once we share out all our ideas :)

There is so much power in partnerships. I am still learning about how this really works, but in a virtual setting see potential to partner with the Jamestown Center. I did some free virtual tutoring for them over the summer and kids did log on. Also might be worth connecting with 826 Valencia. Is this as simple as reaching out via email? Who has experience with this in an educational context? I only know what it's like to partner with orgs in the context of benefit concerts, but maybe it's not so different? Please share what you know!

Connecting with families builds communities. Like how cool would it be to participate in an experience and showcase what you learned to an audience of the people you care most about? This would be such a special opportunity for underserved children. I think SAFEhouse can be a place where a family-friendly event can happen. One thing that really stresses me out as a dance teacher is recitals, but I see so much value in having at least one year's end celebration. Year's end meaning May/June. OH MAN! Or what if we did an annual show on NATIONAL DANCE DAY?

but I think we can do this by creating activities that children can complete without a screen or internet. Most people have access to smart phones these days so I wonder if we could create what's called 'asynchronous' activities. Maybe this looks like a video series kids can watch on YouTube with follow up activities. Some of the children I worked with through Jamestown used cell phones to log on to our classes. But I recognize this does not address folks who don't even have cell phones or plans that allow for unrestricted data use.

Beyond following the guidelines, I don't really know how to answer this question. We don't know when it will be safe to meet in person again, but once we do, of course this means maybe instructors wear masks, temperature checks at the door, putting spots on the floor to space the kids out appropriately, hospital grade air filtration system, make it a drop-off activity only, kids sanitize their hands on the way in and out, kids wear masks?

I'd love to offer classes all year round, maybe we can coincide with the school calendars. Maybe we can offer virtual camps during holidays instead of regular programming. I think once a week is a great place to start, but if more artists want to do more that's something we can think about especially for virtual teaching.

Yeah, ideally TL kids. One of my friends grew up in a shelter in the TL and today she is an amazing visual artist. We complain so much about our building and even explore leaving the TL, but I think we have so much potential to be a force of positive change in the neighborhood. We already are just by being there and opening our door to anyone who wants to make art, and by bringing in kids and families it will emphasize that SAFEhouse is a valuable cultural resource. Once we can meet up in person again, we can provide local kids with a safe space to express themselves. I briefly brought this up years ago, having like an after school kids club... this tells me we really need to partner with other local orgs to grow this idea. Right now I am targeting families with small children, but think it we should expand this to serve a wide range of K-12 kiddos. I once worked for a non-profit that partnered with apartment complexes to provide support services to the residents and our after school program served children ages 7-12. There were teen and young adult groups. 7-12 is a wide spread, but it's inclusive and maybe a way serve more kids at the same time. Maybe eventually we can break offerings into early childhood, 7-12, and teen/high school.
