She was inspired to write Hunger Games from the myth of Theseus and Minotaur. Collins grew up reading Greek and Roman mythology. Basically, Hunger Games is a modern version of Roman gladiator games. Katniss is a futuristic Theseus, who volunteers to fight the Minotaur.
https://www.slj.com/2008/09/interviews/under-cover/a-killer-story-an-interview-with-suzanne-collins-author-of-the-hunger-games/#_

I believe that the Hunger Games books would be read independently more often than read in school. 80% of the reading would happen independently and 20% of the time it would be read for school. It is a debatable subject whether or not the Hunger Games trilogy should be read in schools at all. Most people say that 5th graders should not be required to read it, while the older students grades 7-9 could benefit from some of the themes. While others think the books should not even be sold at the book fairs at the elementary level. There are even some religions that families would not let their children read the Hunger Games books.

The book is best for the age range of 12-14 years old. There are many violent scenes with teen against teen. There is also a love story between Katniss and Peeta, but the book does not over sexualize the relationship. In the book, are many wonderful themes for ages 12 through 14. Katniss serves her community with bravery and sacrifice. Students are forced to think about if they would volunteer for their sister or not. Maybe instead of worrying about their latest crush, it will spark some conversation about life choices and if Panam was reality.
