In class, during discussion, teachers can specify interaction routines such as how discussion should take place. Another instance, when you are assessing students’ understanding during lesson, most likely you will ask questions. Then, question-and-answer routine is necessary to help you. Such routines will help prevent students from shouting their answers and responding out of turn. Students can be taught and trained in simple procedures like raising their hands if they want to answer and wait for teacher to call upon them before talking. While some teachers follow set patterns of questioning, others are creative and use dipsticking or random name generators online. When the class is getting noise during discussion, teachers can quieten the class using hand signals to get their attention. During discussions, teachers often raise hand with fingers pointing upwards to signal stop talking or say “Eyes on me”. Students respond well to the sign once they see or hear it by keeping quiet and listening to the teacher. Some teachers use a bell to get their students’ attention. Students are trained to stop whatever activity they are engaged in once they hear the bell.
