What does Waitangi Day mean to you? To me, it means a chance for different people to come together - as someone said "celebrating the beauty of Aotearoa and our differences."

What can you do when someone is doing something you don't like?

I heard unfortunate news yesterday.  A bunch of students weren't respectful, responsible, and the best they can be. Some students were throwing rocks at the backfield over our neighbours' house. One of the rocks hit a window and broke the neighbour's window.  Who do you think were affected by these actions? In what way were they affected? Most importantly, what do you think we need to do to make things right? 

Reminder Y4-6: There is a singing assembly with Matua Jarrod in the auditorium from 12.00 - 12.30.

Empathy. One of my favourite words. Do you know what it means? Someone once told me it means putting yourself in other people’s shoes (well not literally. Please don’t go around putting your feet into other people’s shoes). For me, it means seeing other people’s perspective and point of view. Well, I had a lovely dinner with a friend at Goode Brothers yesterday.  I haven’t seen for almost 6 years and it was really good to catch up. Mr Jones was right! It did rain on Saturday. I was very happy to see the grass get some water - it wasn’t good for our Pokemon Community day though (sad face).  I hope your weekend was great.  I had plant-based burger at Burger King and vegan pasta. Not sure why. It was surprisingly yummy.

Nothing really exciting happened to me over the weekend - I didn’t win that $50 million. However, I did remind myself about good hygiene practices like - washing my hands frequently and covering my nose when I sneeze using a tissue or my elbow. 

Today is our Goal-Setting meetings. The school will finish at 12.30. If you have no adult at home or picking you up, please make sure you go to the auditorium.

I’ve been hearing this word a lot during the goal setting meetings.  What does respect mean to you? Remember respect is different for everyone. There are different ways to show respect. In my culture, we show respect to our elders by putting their hands on our forehead.  I also believe part of being respectful is being understanding of how other people see the world and accepting differences. When someone is telling you they don’t like, do you respect it and stop doing it? How do you show respect?

Yesterday was an eventful day. While making our environment tidy, Troy hit the water main and this caused a big flood. Thank you to those students who kept away from the area. We had plumbers come in yesterday and I hope everything is back to normal. 

This Friday we will be remembering a very sad event that happened in Christchurch last year. It’s time to remind ourselves that even though we are different we are also the same. Let's celebrate accepting differences.

What do litter-free lunches mean?

How was your weekend? I had a very exhausting weekend. Pokemon Go Fest wasn’t as relaxing as I thought it would be. 

Blockhouse Bay Intermediate Principal Michael Malins will be visiting our Year 6s at 9.15 today. Can all Years 6s be seated by 9.15 in the auditorium? Remember to show your New Windsor values. 

On Friday, we will be celebrating Matariki. Do you know what that is?  Every year seven stars are seen in the night sky  - they are called Matariki clusters. Maori people use it to show the new year and time to harvest food. 

Remember to come dress in black, red or white on Friday to celebrate. We are looking forward to seeing your kites and having some hangi.

Are you or your parents a good baker?
The Parent-Teacher Collective is asking for families to donate cupcakes to sell at the Matariki celebrations. The Parent-Teacher Collective will use the money for education outside the classroom activities. 

Mr Malins was very impressed by our Year 6s. Well done  - you made New Windsor very proud. 

It’s fantastic to see classes making kites. Let’s hope for good weather.

When you find something challenging, what should you do?

The New Windsor values of being respectful, responsible and the best you can be is designed to keep you safe at school. A reminder that tackle rugby is not an appropriate game to play during break times - it is only appropriate if you have a trained coach/referee. Why do you think this is?

Welcome to te wiki o te reo Māori! Did you know that the Māori language was banned in schools?  In 1972,  3 students advocated (a big word I know, ask your kaiako what that means) for a Māori Language Day which turned to a week. Language is tied to culture. Why is it important to learn the Māori language?

Across NZ, people will be stopping to have a Māori Language Moment from noon. During this time we encourage everyone at our kura to celebrate the Māori culture by either korero Māori or to sing the Māori waiata below. Encourage your teachers to record and send to the social media team (Shot Polly, Adele, Robin, Paulette!)

Tomorrow is Car-free day. Do you notice how many cars are around our school when you get dropped off?  It can be quite busy! One way to reduce this is to walk, ride a scooter or bike to school? By doing this, you can also help the environment and keeps you healthy! 

One of New Windsor values is respect. How do you respect the environment? One way is having a litter free lunch. A litter-free lunch is a lunch that is litter-free! It’s harder than it sounds. Here are some examples below:

Did you try to walk to school today? It took me a very long time to get to school yesterday because the Auckland Harbour bridge needs repair. Traffic - yuck!

Ka pai to the students who went car-free today. Not only did you help the environment, but you also got some exercise. You will need this for the Fun Run next term.

Our Rebecca  from Room 13 represented our school at the Zones finals yesterday. She was amazing and did New Windsor proud. The winner came from Epsom Normal and her speech was about gender stereotypes.

Friday is Pink Shirt Day. Remember to wear pink. Do you know why we wear pink? In 2007, a student was being bullied for wearing a pink shirt - 2 students stood up to the bullies. Ever since then, people wear a pink shirt on Pink shirt day to speak up against bullying. You did so well last year let's do that again this year. 😁

What's bullying?
People have different opinions on what it means. Bullying is when all the things below happen:

But sometimes it's hard to know what to actually do when you see someone being bullied.  Research tells us that intervention stops bullying in its tracks. You can make a huge difference when you use words and actions to help someone being bullied. It's called being an Upstander. 

Take a look at the Five Upstander Actions that each of us can take to make a powerful difference and create a stronger, safer community: 

1. Tautoko/support the person being bullied

2. Distract - interrupt the bullying

3. Call bullying behaviour out by using kindness (sometimes asking them why they did that helps!)

4. Leave and act

5. Get some other help

Not great.  I thought it would help to ignore it for a few days. It didn't.  Currently bitcoin is worth NZ$51,879.57.  A drop of $6,000 since last week.  I say hold. I still believe it will rise by Christmas.  Fingers crossed.

What a great effort put in by our Cross Country Representatives - through their determined efforts we had Layla take 1st place in the 7 year old girls and Diana took a 2nd in the 9 year old girls race. More satisfying for me was the efforts of the students who fell over and picked themselves up and continued on. These students showing what resilience looks like. A great team of representatives...

Fale Results New Windsor School Cross Country

Every student who participated in this years Cross Country earned a token for their Fale. If you came in 1st you earned 10 tokens, 2nd you earned 9 tokens, 3rd you earned 8 tokens, 4th you earned 7 tokens, 5th you earned 6 tokens and you were invited to be part of the NWS 2021 Cross Country Team. If you place 6th - 10th you earned 5 tokens. Below are the total tokens earned by each Fale for this years event.

Today is the day! This is when we put together all of the songs, chants and marches we have been practising for the last few weeks. We will be launching our Fale today and we will be blessing the new shade and turf in Area 1.

Polar Blast
NZ is in the middle of a polar blast which means some very cold wind is blowing up from Antartica. It will blow across the South Island and parts of the lower North Island including Wellington. The North Island is also expected to feel a dramatic drop in temperature today along with a bit of rain and wind. Stay warm and dry.

Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences
Today we have our first day for Parent - Teacher - Student Conferences. School will be finishing early today and on Tuesday. Students who are staying at school until 3pm today will be going to the auditorium. There will be a movie being played in there.

I heard that both teams played very well on Saturday. It wasn't freezing. It was actually pretty nice. Ka pai our netballers.

One more sleep before the weekend yay. Then we have a 2 week break.

I spent Thursday night with some of my extended family. We went to see the Lion King.  I was lucky to get some free tickets from my cousin.  Her moko was performing in the show so many of us went to see him.  He is 10 years old. The only thing he really needed on his CV was that he was in Kapa Haka.  Get your CVs sorted everyone.  I'm thinking about leaving teaching to pursue a career as dancing grass.  I think I can sway gracefully with a lot of practise.

The Olympics have started in Tokyo. It is an unusual time in the world right now with Covid-19 causing many changes to our lives. However, I have been enjoying seeing the dedication and commitment of these athletes who have made sacrifices to train to test their skills against other dedicated athletes.  For me, the most beautiful sport in the world is Judo and I have been enjoying the best coverage of Judo that I have ever seen in my entire life.  I hope you enjoy watching different sports as much as I have.

Good news.  I'm not sure what is causing the change in Bitcoin value BUT it is going up very rapidly.

I am excited as we enter Day 4 of the Olympic Games.  I spent the evening watching the Judo finals. 

 

Congratulations to Hayden Wilde from Whakatane who won NZ's first Olympic medal yesterday with a bronze in the Triathalon. New Zealand is on the Medal Table now yay.

Well, they can bounce or hop because of their long and strong feet. They can hop forward a long way with just one push from their back legs. When they land, their front legs help keep them balanced.

Even though we have left Summer behind, we are in for a warm Autumn apparently. That means water bottles are needed. Make sure you are bringing a full bottle each day.

Here is the answer to "Why are plants green?"
- Guess what? Plants aren't really green, it's just what we see them as. We see green because each plant has ,in their cells, a small structure called chloroplasts. These are oval things containing something called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll absorbs red and blue light and the rest of the light that comes down from the sky gets reflected back, which makes it look green. 
Blimey, that's very sciencey for a Friday morning. (You're welcome Mr Henderson!)

Yesterday I asked: Where do clouds come from? 
- Clouds are made up of hundreds of thousands of tiny droplets of water! When you see a white cloud in the sky it might look like one big fluffy blob, but if you got up close, you'd see that it's made up of loads of tiny beads of water. High clouds are made up of tiny ice crystals. 
Clouds come from water in the air, called water vapour. Most of the time you can't see it, but it comes together to form clouds. Whenever the air cools, there is the chance of clouds appearing.

Okey dokey, here's the answer to yesterday's question:
- Clouds make rain when they grow tall and begin to look dark and grey at the bottom. The water droplets that make up the cloud near the top start to freeze. When the droplets turn into ice crystals, they grab on to the water. They grow bigger and bigger until they start to fall.. As they fall, they pass through warmer air and melt, this turns them back into water drops which fall to the ground. 

Moving on from the weather, here's the next question:
