Read "The Art Lesson" aloud and talk about Tomie dePaola's interests. Discuss that his story in "The Art Lesson" was a much more interesting way to learn about him than him blatantly saying he enjoyed drawing. Explain that we will be learning more about Tomie's life and other interests through his books. Introduce Literature Circles.

Some chapters may be read as a class, with the teacher reading and the students following along. Other chapters may be assigned to students to read as independent reading, however the language can be a bit more advanced in this book. Some students may be asked to read it independently, while others may be asked to partner read or choral read with the teacher. At the end of this reading, the class will finish their efferent response charts and discuss how each of the picture books ties into this chapter book. This will lead us to the culminating project in which students will write from the literature model of Tomie dePaola's books.
