Bonaparte was a lieutenant in the artillery before he joined the army of the new government. When the French were in need of a leader after the monarchy was thrown off, Napoleon eagerly stepped up. He kept many of the changes that came with the Revolution to please the people. Napoleon set up an efficient method of tax collection to stable the economy. Napoleon attempted to end corruption within the government. He let go of uneducated and unprofessional government officials. He set up schools to provide France with trained officers. However, Napoleon did disregard changes to the revolution about religion. He made revisions to the relationship with the government and the church, rejecting the church regarding national affairs. He was able to decrease their power in politics. His greatest work was the Napoleonic Code, giving France a uniform set of laws and eliminating injustices. With these alters made, Napoleon was able to changes France for the better, ultimately playing a big part in how the Revolution was a success.

Paraphrase from 'The Revolution Brings Reform and Terror'

"Among these rights the following should be especially noted: the nation should hereafter subject only to such laws and taxes as it shall itself freely ratify." (Cahiers de Doleances)

Before the Revolution, King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antionette refused to give up their lavish spending to balance the struggling economy. The reigned in debt without care, ignoring pleas from the third estate and advice from their advisors. The people were forced to pay outrageous taxes to support the King & Queen's habit of spending, a large contributing factor in the Revolution. People fought hard to overthrow the monarchy and gain stability back into the economy. Leaders such as Napoleon were successfully able to fill their grievances by setting up an efficient method of tax collection and a national banking system.

"Your conduct, then, ought also to be regulated by the stormy circumstances in which the republic is placed; and the plan of your administration must result from the spirit of the revolutionary government combined with the general principles of democracy..." (Moral and Political Principles of Domestic Policy by Robespierre)

The French Constitution was created by the National Assembly, or the third estate battling for their rights in the Revolution. It outlined the laws and basic rights of man that the French should follow and use as a guideline while making decisions going forward. The Revolution brought this document that would forever change the French government for the better. It shaped the French system of democracy and allowed them to live equally and freely.

Overthrow of the Monarchy

The king easily overlooked the third estate’s power to overthrow him at first, but quickly realized they had more power than he had thought. Building frustration and inequality were two of the leading factors that caused the fallout between the king and his people. Within these two categories, taxes, food, and poverty were different problems that people were struggling with every day, while the monarchs lived lavishly with no willingness to help. Over time, the third estate became increasingly disappointed with there nothing being done to help their growing disparity. Eventually, in 1789, they took matters into their own hands, and broke from the monarchy to form their own government to solve their own problems. They resorted to violence to prove their point. Using these destructive and bloody tactics, the third estate was able to make themselves dangerous to the king, and soon had him outnumbered and out powered. This lead to a government where everyone had a chance to let themselves be heard and make a difference. A King or Queen could no longer make all the decisions, now people as a collective ruled their own government.
