         <description><![CDATA[<div>1. Vietnam was controlled by China for hundreds of years, but years later they overthrew their rulers and became independent. After a couple of years, French gradually started to conquer China and then had a fight, Vietnam surrendered and leaded to French taking over Vietnam.&nbsp;<br>2. The French made changes by teaching the Vietnamese to speak French, teaching Catholicism, french history, literature, and changing some of the laws.<br>3. As a French Official, I would say taking over Vietnam was a good choice because we are spreading words of our French people. They are learning the ways of the French and therefore will lead to French History expanding beyond anyone's limits.</div>]]></description>

Before the French arrived the Vietnamese were also ruled by many different emperors, however they taxed the citizens modestly and didn't have much "real" power over them either. Many lived in villages and grew rice, taught to them by their Chinese conquerors. The level of education in the villages was high, with 4/5 Vietnamese taught to read and write their own language and also taught calligraphy introduced by the Chinese.</div>]]></description>

The people were taxed to the point they were forced into intense labor to maybe make it through. Their homes and surrounding were advanced by the french, there was now railroad, paved streets and cars, roads and bridges, and electricity. The lessened the harsh punishments of the Vietnamese and used the people to make themselves richer.</div>]]></description>

The helpful advancements like ways to travel, making the punishments less brutal and teaching them how to gain certain resources were good. But basically banning their own religion and not allowing them to speak their native language was horrible.
