- Because of the large population, the lack of infrastructure contributed to the poor living conditions. There were not enough supplies/ utilities to keep everything safe and sanitary.
- The infrastructure effected the life in the workplace because people were not trained in what they were doing and the working environments were not safe and very unsanitary. 
- Because of the problems in the workplace, not all products were safe to use. The country also had a large amount of coal so they could get however much they wanted. So they had a lot of coal and they get a lot of money from using it so they did whatever it took. It would pollute the streams and there was a high death risk because a lot of times the mines would cave in.

The people are supposed to choose who is in power based on taking a vote of what the population wants - that is a big part of a democracy. Political machines would rig elections taking that right of the people away.
Political machines would also make laws in favor of big business disregarding the needs of average people.
