As in other sharks, the upper jaw of a Great White is not fused to the skull. Instead, the jaws are slung loosely beneath the skull, held in place by flexible connective tissue and braced by accessory cartilages. Special muscles pull the jaw complex forward and down, riding on grooves on the undersurface of the skull. This arrangement allows a Great White to protrude its jaws outward from the head, extending the reach of its teeth and creating a partial vacuum that helps suck in prey.

FUN FACTS

1. Great white sharks can detect one drop of blood in 25 gallons (100 liters) or water and they can sense even a little blood up to 3 miles (5 km) away.
2. The great white's light body color helps it blend in to the coastal waters it inhabits.
3. Sharks have a tongue made of cartilage called a basihyal; they use it to sample prey, to see if it is a good idea to eat it or not.
4. While in their mother's womb, young great whites swallow their own teeth.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------MEGA FACT (At least for me it is)----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* The great white shark averages 4.5 m (15 ft.) in length, but some have been recorded as large as 6 m (20 ft.) long! They generally weigh up to 2250 kg (5000 lb.).
Quick Fact: Okay for those who do not know what LB is this is what it means: Lb is an abbreviation of the Latin word libra. The primary meaning of Libra was balance or scales, but it also stood for the ancient Roman unit of measure libra pondo, meaning “a pound by weight.”
