In conjunction with Root Canal Awareness Week earlier this year, the American Association of Endodontists released a new patient-centered video about the advanced level of care an endodontist can offer, particularly when facing a potential tooth extraction. In a recent survey, more than three-quarters of US citizens expressed a desire to keep their permanent teeth whenever possible when facing advanced tooth issues. Endodontists help accomplish this through root canals and other specialized procedures. 

Other information presented in the video pertained to the advanced education that endodontists must complete in order to practice. Not only do they have to graduate dental school, but they must also complete post-graduate training in endodontics that can last between two and three years. In a 2015 interview undertaken at the American Academy of Implant Dentistry’s annual conference, Dr. Misch spoke about his rationale in creating the system of implant treatment that he has taught to many practitioners through an institute. One major emphasis is on taking a whole mouth approach when recommending implants. 

Dr. Misch feels that two-implant overdentures are a misguided approach, as they inhabit the front of the mouth, where strong bone typically lies. Meanwhile, the back of the mouth is losing bone at four times the rate as the front and going untreated. Overdentures even accelerate the loss of posterior bone and make major complications such as fractures and paresthesias more likely. He calls this two-implant approach part of the problem rather than part of the solution.

By contrast, Dr. Misch typically recommends a set of 5-7 implants within a fixed restoration, as a way of preventing posterior bone loss. The literal translation of biomimetic is bio (“life like”) and mimetic (“copy”). Since the human tooth was naturally endowed with the qualities necessary to endure the wear and tear of normal use, when a tooth is decayed or damaged, biomimetic dentistry endeavors to return it to its original condition through a conservative and less invasive approach than that used by most dentists today.

In contrast to traditional dentistry, the biomimetic approach attempts to return the tooth to its full function by creating a bond for the enamel, dentin, and cementum hard tissues. This bond allows stresses to pass naturally through the tooth and on to the bone while the tooth regains its natural appearance and function.

For example, traditional dentistry will often attempt to fuse porcelain to amalgam fillings or gold or other metal crowns.
