  • Kumashior (2001) challenges the fixed, stating that intersection of identity must be considered, “Initiatives to make schools safer for GLBT students and to integrate GLBT issues into the curriculum als must incorporate an understanding of how GLBT your of color’s experiences differ from those of white GLBT students” (p. 56).  Further, LGBTTIQ of color also experience racism in white dominant LGBTTIQ groups.  In the case of Wisdom and King, the lack of discussion points to the invisibility of race when issues of sexuality and gender are given primacy.

  • Safe schools focuses on the individual, either understanding the behavior of an individual or educating people about the other, failing to recognize the role of the system. Example: Anti-bullying curriculum focus on the bully as perpetrator and those bullied as the victim (never both), rather than focusing on the systemic problems that contribute to the development of the bully and the assumed superiority of the bully, which often relate to privilege and power.
