The chapter is entitled "On the Waves" which encapsulates the way Ratliff views the idea of music representing the ebb and flow of life. Ratliff uses many worldly examples of his idea such as a bird flying to and from its nest. Another repetitive motion of life he gives is the wooden floorboards of a house. This idea of music representing the repetitive motion of life is reflected in many artist's songs. One example Ratliff gives is the composer Edgard Varese. Varese also agreed with Ratliff's views and used the term "organized sound" to describe the phenomena. Varese compares the repetitive motion of music to the scientific growth of crystals. They begin to evolve from the center and go outward, similar to how music grows. The other examples Ratliff uses have contrasting music genres, ranging from classical to spiritual music.
