The Great Schism, also known as the East / West Schism is the division of Christianity between the east and the west. The Christian religion formally split in 1054 when the Roman Pope excommunicated the patriarch of Constantinople. This schism occurred due to the geographical distance, theological, linguistic and cultural differences. These differences led up to the formal split of the Christian faith into Eastern Orthodox and Catholicism. Reforms began to emerge and these reformers were punished. This great schism changed the way the east and the west interacted with each other and majorly contributed to our church today.
