They took the risk and launched Planet Labs which would be changed to just Planet. They wanted their satellites to be okay but to be able to send a lot out and be able to help the farmers and the ecologists.

2001: Will and Robbie Meet

At a conference in Austria about using Space for the betterment of humanity Will and Robbie meet. When Robbie first met Will he noticed that Will was a huge motivator for people and that his outgoing personality was infectious. During the conference the two would be going back and forth on email. The genesis of their friendship was collaboration, being able to work together and rely on each other for help.

(Labor)2006: Will and Robbie invited to Work at NASA

Will and Robbie met the head of the entire military for weaponizing space while they were at a conference. During the conference they had great conversation with him because they were against it and he was for it. The morning after he messaged them asking to right a paper where he’ll write the pros and they’ll write the cons. Finally a little after that he got a job at Ames research center and invited Will and Robbie to come work with him.

(Land)2006: Will and Robbie Move in Together

When they both move to the Ames Research Center they created a group home where they loved to continue the conversation after the work day. They moved in together and they hosted college students to live with them to further their ideas. They would work out of the garage of this community house. (The first prototype was created here)

December 31st, 2009: The Idea

As Will, Robbie and one other NASA scientist Chris Boshuizen, are all together on New Year’s Eve celebrating the new year when they get the idea that they should send their own satellites into space to be able to take pictures of the Earth every single day instead of waiting weeks for a photo.

After 11 years the company finally was able to go live on the NYSE. They needed to go live so that they would have a revenue stream so that they can continue building their rockets.

2013: First Successful Launch of Satellite

The Boys at Planet Labs ‘hitched’ a ride on another rocket via another company. They didn’t need an entire rocket for themselves so they paid a secondary payment to be able to launch their satellite into orbit.
