Introduction (10 min):
1. Warm up with a simple addition and subtraction problem on the board.
2. Discuss: What do we do when a story problem needs more than one step?

Direct Instruction (15 min):
1. Model a two-step story problem on the board. (Example: "Sam has 5 apples. She buys 4 more. Then, she gives 3 to a friend. How many apples does she have now?")
2. Solve each step together, writing equations for each step.
3. Watch example video (see Media post).

Guided Practice (15 min):
1. Students work in pairs to solve a two-step story problem provided by the teacher.
2. Groups share their solutions and explain their thinking.

Independent Practice (10 min):
1. Students solve two similar problems independently in their notebooks.

Closing (5 min):
1. Review: What are the two steps?
2. Check for understanding with Exit Ticket (see Assessment post).
