Celtic Interconnector: interconnection project between France and Ireland

Type : electricity, renewable energy

The aim of the Celtic Interconnector is to link the Irish grid to the mainland European grid, with a continuous DC link, 575 km in length between Cork in Ireland and Brittany in France. The electrical link ensures power transmission in both directions: Ireland – France and France – Ireland.

This project will thus contribute to the European target for energy transition and addressing climate change. It will thus foster sustained development of wind power in Ireland and its integration in the European electricity system. In France, this new interconnection will ensure consumption of green electricity routed from Ireland. It thus constitutes a driver to support energy transition by facilitating change in the electricity mix.

LINK : https://www.rte-france.com/en/projects/celtic-interconnector-interconnexion-between-france-ireland

Costa Rica's electricity production is almost completely renewable (around 98%), so the electric train would generate no additional emissions other than the emissions needed for its construction.
More information: https://www.bcie.org/en/electric-train-of-costa-rica

Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city in Brazil, with nearly 7 million inhabitants and all the environmental problems associated to large cities. Inequalities are a problem in Brazil as a country, once the country is known as one of the worst Gini Index. Insufficient investments on public education, public health and all the welfare state initiatives for the less fortunate delays the development of a inclusive society connected to the world. Inefficient sewage treatment threatening water quality in rivers and Guanaraba Bay, insufficient garbage collection, disposal and treatment, turning the city into a mess when we analyze this topic. Urban zoning is a problem, with most of the city not covered by basic sanitation or basic urban equipment. The favela's structure is a problem because population doesn't have access to a medium to high quality of life due to poor quality of public policies implemented . Lack of security is a problem faced in a daily basis. On the other hand, several initiatives regarding public transportation since the 1990's helped to reduce the pressure to use individual transportation in favor of public mass transportation. Brazil has a considerable "clean" energy grid, most of it coming from hydropower, with rising numbers of solar panels being implanted in cities due to the rising price of energy. The project I choose to present is the implementation of solar panels to produce energy in 1.150 public buildings, aiming at reducing the cost of energy consumption and increase the generation of energy for buildings, resulting in more efficiency, at first glance.

However, there are less and less young car owners in recent years. Especially for city dwellers, they can use public transportation and car sharing service in their daily lives and can rent a car when they need to drive long distance while being free from important recurrent costs (maintenance, assurance, parking fee etc). Young generation is more aware of CO2 emissions than the generation of their parents. Mindsets are changing.
Naoko, public sector

State Power vs. Free Markets: France’s Energy Dilemma

Looking at the European energy landscape, France is a unique case. Unlike many of its neighbours who rely heavily on imported fossil gas, France made a strategic choice decades ago to rely on state-backed nuclear power for about % 70 of its electricity. This gives the country a massive head start in low-carbon energy.

However, France perfectly highlights how strict market-driven economic models can actually slow down a green transition.

The biggest issue is that Europe's unified energy market tries to treat electricity like any other short-term commodity. Because of European market rules, the price of electricity is often tied to the global price of fossil gas, even if the energy is actually generated cleanly and cheaply at home. So, when global gas prices spike due to geopolitical crises, French consumers still end up paying inflated bills. This artificial price volatility makes it harder to convince people and businesses to switch to electric cars or clean heating systems.

Furthermore, relying purely on the invisible hand of the free market doesn't work well for massive green transitions. Building new nuclear reactors or mega offshore wind farms requires billions in upfront cash and decades to pay off. Private investors looking for quick quarterly profits hate that kind of long term risk.

To bypass this market gridlock, the French government recently had to step in and take full % 100 control of its main energy utility to directly fund these giant clean energy projects.

The Bottom Line

France shows that a successful energy transition cannot just be left to free-market fundamentalism. When a country needs to completely overhaul its energy grid for the climate, you need deep state planning and long-term security, not just unpredictable market forces.
