 Scientist might use the concept "scale" to study the effects of flooding on a population by measuring how much water the soil can withstand before flooding.

 On a 160 corn field a flash flood  would kill off the corn by giving them over excess water and washing away any possible seeds. 

When lava flows into the ocean it can have both positive and negative effects. 

When lava flows into the ocean, it cools down and becomes rocks. That creates habitats for sea life. On the flipped side the lava does heat up the water which can become too hot for certain sea life.
