The image uses color to give a focal point because it’s not readily apparent otherwise given the layering of reflections in the image. It feels like one of those brain teaser posters, with so many different aspects to look at. Everything comes across a bit blurry to me so even though the lady is the focus and forefront of the photo I’m very distracted by the window reflection over her. The exposure is impressive given the motion of the people walking by, the light sky, the dark street and the main subject looking to be standing still. Tremendous skill I would say!

Captures the spirit of NYC

It's a really creative use of reflective surfaces to create a collage of different subjects/objects and geometric shapes in the image, which echoes the hustle-and-bustle of NYC. The red figures centered in the image provide a striking color contrast to the brown neutrals of the buildings and other figures. The color scheme shows an overall warmth between the dark reds and the yellow/golden browns - the photographer has a friendly view of NYC. I like the use of slow shutter speed to capture motion and blur the figures. When I attempt street photography, I often struggle with the ethics of taking photos of strangers, but this is a nice approach taken by the photographer to anonymize the people.

The striking red in the coats immediately draws the viewer's attention, creating a vivid contrast against the muted grays and browns of the cityscape. The photographer likely had to carefully manage motion blur and exposure to capture the movement of the crowd without losing the boldness of the red. Framing and timing were also key; waiting for the right subject to pass in front of the lens allowed the red to become the central visual anchor in an otherwise busy and layered composition.

Movement Captured in NYC

The placement of the lady with the red dress in the center is very captivating. This brings the viewers attention directly to her. I think Ernst Haas did a great job capturing NYC with the people walking to describe the city in his perspective. The lights from the sun beaming into the buildings shine beautifully. Also, the reflective light beneath the lady adds a nice touch to the image; and the tiny white specs seen almost give a grainy effect to it. I like the color control Haas used in his image by having almost 80% of the image with color and 20% darker, such as the path on the left side. That is very impressive! Street photography may be spontaneous but having the right timing for an image like this, while making sure the camera settings are correct, makes the image even better. I wonder how long Haas had to wait for this precise moment.

The lady in the red coat is the main subject of this photo, the use of color captivates the eye directly to her. The people are out of focus, while the city scape is in focus, creating a double exposure effect that draws the viewers attetnion throughout the image. The use of light/dots layered within the people alerts the viewer to recognize those subjects as well. The bokeh effect in the top half of the photo creates a balance of the lights used, this again pushes the viewers eyes across the image. I think the building refelction being over the woman in red is a bit distracting, but it did make me pan out to view the image as a whole and allowing me to recognize the background.

Lilianna Bryant.

The photo shown depicts a person in red in the center with a cityscape behind the subject. It looks like the photo is taken of a reflection of the street through a reflective surface. The photographer had to keep the shutter speed and aperture in mind in order to capture and not overexpose the subject to best capture the color of the jackets.

The most impactful part of this image has to be the lady and her child with red clothes. I think the framing and colors make it very clear that the main subject is this lady and her child because she is centered in the frame and the colors of the background being dull compared to the bright striking red. The photographer would have had to visualize this image once he saw it and had to keep in mind that he wants to focus on the buildings rather than the people in the reflection. I really liked how the child is perfectly in line with the Christmas lights like the lights are sparkles in her jacket.

I believe the fact that the artist put this very strong color in the middle of the image is already a way to captivate the audience. Maybe he wanted us to focus on the woman and child for a moment. Although it's a strong color, it has less opacity -- which makes it feel less bold and more warm for me. It gives me a nostalgic feeling. If it was a very bold red, maybe it would give me another feeling. The Christmas lights also give it a more warm feeling. The layering and collage style also influence the nostalgic feeling I'm getting. It's a beautiful photo.

What drew me to this image the most was probably the woman in the red coat since the red was the only "out of place" color in the photograph. She was centered right in the middle of the image which additionally captured my attention and red is just naturally an eye-catching color. Additionally, the background, which was the brightest part of the image, also caught my attention, showing the city and how busy it is with all the motion of the people. It's clear to me that the photographer framed the subjects and the city very well and the timing of capturing the lady was very well done.

This picture is a great example of using color to emphasize the focal point of the image. There is a lot of look at, some things being clearer than others, but the eye is drawn to the middle where they'll find a mass of bright red. The lady stands out so much despite not being totally in focus. I do like the darker colors that surround the woman on the bottom half and the brighter ones closer to the top that make her appear to have no head. It seems like the photographer had to move locations? I assume this because the blurrier parts look like a completely different angle. Unless this is a reflection. An interesting photo indeed.

Your eye is drawn to the color red. I had to focus and determine if there were two coats. It looks as if there is a mother and child in the photo. The lady is carrying a red bag. The cityscape is reflective, as the windows are creating their reflections. People are blurred as they are moving along the street. This is an interesting work of art.
