Digital Burnout: The Invisible Cost of Always Being Online

This article explains the concept of digital burnout, understood as the physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion caused by constant exposure to technology and permanent connectivity. Unlike traditional burnout, it is not limited to the workplace but extends to everyday life due to the continuous use of digital devices.

It highlights that this phenomenon is mainly driven by the lack of boundaries between personal and professional life, constant overstimulation, and the pressure to always be available, which can lead to mental fatigue, concentration problems, irritability, and sleep disturbances.

I recommend this article because it clearly and relevantly helps to understand how hyperconnectivity affects daily well-being, making it easier to identify habits that may be causing exhaustion without being fully aware of it.

https://www.hiwellapp.com/es-ES/blog/digital-burnout

OFFLINE, BUT ON:

Core Idea: A challenge that flips the assumption that being offline means missing out. Disconnecting is not absence, it is presence. You are not going offline. You are going fully on: with yourself, your environment, and the people around you.

This is the strategic centerpiece because it does something rare: it uses the same behavioral mechanics that make digital platforms addictive, gamification, streaks, rewards, and redirects them toward healthier offline habits. It doesn't ask students to abandon their world. It gives them a structured, achievable way to reclaim it.

Hootsuite has introduced new employee benefits aimed at combating burnout and supporting overall well-being. During the first week of July, its 1,000 employees received four paid days off as part of a “wellness week” designed to help reduce extreme fatigue linked to remote work and work-life imbalance.

Beyond additional time off, the company has expanded its benefits package to include coverage for gender affirmation treatments and fertility care within its health insurance plan. It also runs periodic travel giveaways to destinations like Bali and Lisbon, alongside financial counseling and mental health and self-care programs.

CEO Tom Keiser stated that these initiatives are part of a broader strategy to prioritize employee well-being, emphasizing that healthier employees drive innovation and long-term company success. The move reflects a wider trend among companies responding to rising burnout and workforce resignations by offering more mental health and lifestyle-focused benefits

The campaign proposes transforming the university into a network of “Disconnection Points”—strategically located physical spaces where students can experience a genuine respite from digital pressure. Through activations such as bearing the physical weight of notifications, signal-free zones, or controlled interruptions, the initiative makes tangible how constant connectivity translates into mental and physical exhaustion. Rather than merely stating this, it makes you feel it. Thus, it invites students to recognize the signs of fatigue, let go of the obligation to be constantly available, and reclaim control over their own pace with a clear message: it is not connection; it is pressure.

Bricked Spaces:

there is this device called "Brick" and their mission is to block the apps that prevent you from being in the moment. their tagline is "Go back to what matters". I love the idea of creating "Bricked Spaces" in FIU where you have the option to choose to block your temptations (of being on your phone, constantly checking) and choose to have a breather.

Incorporate bricked spaces in the food hall, the graham center, the study halls, outside, etc.

The key thing is that once you tap the brick, you have the option to choose the apps you want to block (for the time being). the power of choice is super important when it comes to mental health, only you can be the one to take the step and i think that's very powerful

The campaign introduces “mandatory pause zones” within the university where the pace intentionally slows down. Through micro-interventions like temporary WiFi blocks, screen-free spaces, or guided disconnection moments, burnout is reframed not as weakness, but as a direct result of constant overexertion. The goal is to make exhaustion tangible so students recognize their limits and understand that resting isn’t wasting time—it’s necessary to recover and keep going.

It’s too much stimulation without rest

Insight: People are not “less interested”: they are exhausted

2. RESEARCH

Psychological angle

Anxiety, fatigue, loss of focus

Constant comparison + pressure to be “always on” (social media culture)

Insight: burnout is emotional + cognitive

Cultural/social angle

Rise of “doomscrolling” fatigue

Trend toward:

nostalgia

offline hobbies

real-life experiences

Insight: people want to escape digital

Marketing angle

Ad fatigue = lower engagement

Overexposure = people actively avoid brands

Insight: “More content” doesn't mean better: brands must be smarter, not louder

FACTS & DATA

People see 4,000–10,000 ads/day

Average screen time: 6–7 hours/day

Gen Z checks their phone every 5–10 minutes

Attention span dropped to ~8 seconds

= We are not designed to process this much input → overload = shutdown

PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT

Effects:

anxiety

sleep problems

decreased concentration

dopamine dependency (addiction to scrolling)

Mechanism:

Social media → dopamine hits

The brain gets used to constant stimulation

Silence = uncomfortable

Insight: People are not addicted to content, they are addicted to stimulation

3. CURRENT & PAST CAMPAIGNS

1. Anti-digital / unplug campaigns

“Unplugging” trend (luxury + Gen Z) → no-phone experiences

 Insight: disconnect = premium experience

2. Experiential / offline campaigns

Brands creating IRL activations (events, pop-ups)

Consumers want immersive experiences after burnout

Example idea:

Offline installations

Sensory experiences (touch, smell, sound)

3. Mindful marketing campaigns

Less intrusive, more meaningful content

Focus on quality over quantity

Strategy shift: From “interrupt” to “respect attention”

4. Mental health awareness campaigns

Multi-platform storytelling campaigns (TikTok, YouTube, etc.) reaching millions

Insight: Storytelling + empathy works

5. Creative/art campaigns

Visual metaphors:

overloaded brains

glitch aesthetics

“trapped in screen” visuals

Insight: strong visual storytelling = powerful impact

Digital burnout comes across as something deeper than just “too much screen time.” It’s more about how constant connectivity has become normal in everyday life. Because everything is related to digital platforms, stepping away isn’t always realistic, which makes burnout harder to avoid in the first place.

One of the main ideas is information overload. With so much content available at all times, having access to more information doesn’t necessarily improve understanding. In many cases, it actually makes it harder to focus, process ideas, and make decisions (Savić, 2023). While this issue has existed for a long time, it has intensified with social media, smartphones, and the speed at which content is produced today (Savić, 2023). A large portion of this information is also unfiltered, which adds another layer of difficulty when trying to determine what is actually useful or reliable.

Another important point is that even when people feel overwhelmed by digital platforms, they still continue to use them. This creates a kind of cycle where burnout and dependency exist at the same time. Digital platforms are often too convenient or necessary to avoid, which makes it difficult for users to reduce their usage, even when they recognize the negative effects (Ashraf et al., 2023).

The issue is also connected to the way work and personal life overlap, especially in digital environments. When both happen on the same devices, it becomes harder to fully disconnect. Burnout, in this sense, is not only about long hours but also about the lack of clear boundaries. Without that separation, people are more likely to experience both physical symptoms and mental fatigue (Kumar & Nandini, 2023).

Digital burnout appears to be less about technology itself and more about how it is used and integrated into daily life. Continuous exposure to information, reliance on digital platforms, blurred boundaries, and social pressure all contribute to the problem. Because of this, the most effective approach is not complete disconnection, but developing more balanced and intentional ways of engaging with technology.

References

Ashraf, M., Hou, F., Ahmad, W., & Ahmad, M.

One Sense at a time

The core strategy for the FIU Reset Room revolves around the "One Sense at a Time" concept. This approach uses sensory grounding to directly combat digital burnout. Since constant screen time causes cognitive overload and numbs the mind to the immediate surroundings, the goal was to create an experience that forces a pause to isolate just one physical sensation.

Focusing on a single sense acts as an anchor, pulling students out of the digital noise and right back into the present moment.

The strategy here ties directly back to the campaign's ultimate goal: providing tangible, everyday tools to help students "get their senses back" and manage cognitive overload anywhere on campus.

The Letter:

Included in the bag is a grounding letter serving as a final, physical touchpoint. It reinforces the core message of reclaiming control over digital perception.

The Stress Toy (Sense of Touch):

To provide an immediate, physical anchor, a Roary stress toy was included.

For the posters designs, I wanted to really contrast the typical saturated "catch your attention" poster designs, and go with something more simple. Something that would be the opposite of overstimulating. When you look at these posters, it's simple, minimalistic, one line designs. I added a pop of red color around teh word "Burned out" to highlight the sense of being burned out, of 'something feels wrong" aka red. Then I contrasted with black lines across a white background, to stay with the concept of simplicity. I wanted the posters to stand out against all other posters across campus, which tend to focus on caching your attention. I chose delicate strokes for all of them to create a sense of coherence, but after receiving feedback, I know I choose different styles that do not align with my intention of cohesion. Aside from that, I added the information about the location and the instagram that we created for the campaign, as well as the QR code for students to scan it and be sent directly to the instagram where they can RSVP to the event. I really wanted to focus on simplicity, and I created five different posters, one for each sense, to really highlight the concept of our campaign "one sense at a time". The purpose of the illustrations I chose was so when the student saw each poster, they would think directly about that sense without us having to spell it out for them. I really focused on "less is more".

In our social media campaign, we wanted to focus on creating visuals that highlighted not only peaceful imagery, but made you think about your presence, and your connection with your senses. For example, for listening, we chose the copy: "You hear the noise, but are you listening" and we placed on a visual of a forest where you could hear the chirping, while looking at the water and the grass. This makes you feel like you are IN the forest, and it's asking you to pay attention. So when you get off your phone, you look around your surroundings, and start paying attention to what you are hearing around you. With taste, we chose the copy "you take a bite, but are you tasting?" This makes you rethink about your eating habits. It's very common when stressed or anxious, for a person to eat, to try to soothe their nervous system. This is challenging that anxiety attack, and asking them to retouch with their taste. To enjoy the taste of the food, not just the action of eating. This reconnects you with your body. Then we chose the ASMR touch visuals, which are already inherently relaxing due to its ASMR factor. We used the copy "You make contact, but are you feeling?" This encourages students to think about what they are touching, and how it makes them feel. Human are very touch based. They starve for human touch, and our nervous systems relax when we are being hugged. Touch is soothing for a person, and it's important for students to reconnect with how it feels to touch and to be touched. And lastly, for smell, we chose the copy "you draw a breath, but are you taking it in?" Breathing is so natural for humans that we do it even without realizing, but when we are having an anxiety attack or we are being overwhelmed with stress due to digital burnout, we are told to take a deep breath. And yes, taking a deep breath helps your nervous system, but we want to encourage students to be even more conscious of just breahting in to calm themselves, we want to encourage them to be aware that they are breathing in. We wanted to use the copy to make them think about their presence, and the visuals we chose were focused on visually relaxing the mind, while also being visuals associated to the sense we wanted them to focus on. Aka the flowers for smell, the burger for taste, the river for hearing, and the spongy strawberry for touch.

after receiving feedback on the campaign, I went ahead and focused on redesigning the posters to create a more cohesive set of visuals. I decided to go with the key starting design which was the face with the hand on the noise to reflect smell from the original set of poster designs that we presented in class, because I felt like that was the most clear one visually. And it was the starting visual that inspired the whole set of posters. I also liked the strong thick line, with simple strokes, but clear face visuals to reflect the sense. So I went ahead and played around with the other senses, while trying to maintain the key concept of the smell visual, which was the artistic style and the face visual. So here, in every single sense a face is included, but I play around with the hand, as well as adding squiggly lines to represent the feeling of the sense. It's not finalized, specially the "see/vision" poster, and I don't know if I'm convinced with the style, but as of right now, I do think it's more cohesive and still strongly reflects the concept of showing one sense at a time. I might play around with the other art styles in the original set of posters because they felt more elegant, but I do like how effective and cohesive this version of the posters is.

After receiving feedback on the mockups, we are going to find better ones that reflect FIU and student paths and add our (updated versions of the posters, which is not IN THIS mockup visual) to them, to include them in our campaign board/video. This is just an example of a mockup we might use when editing our campaign. we also are adding the bags with the original design posters to show the five senses in the bags. We decided to go with five different designs on the bag rather than try to have all the bags have all the senses, to first, continue with the concept of one sense at a time, but also to encourage students to go more than once. Perhaps someone will want to get each sense bag, so they will go over and over again to get another one. It could be a collection spreed. As soon as the new set of posters is finalized, we will update this mockups with the correct ones, and we will gather more FIU centered mockups to add our visuals.

This is the real social media account we created for the campaign. It includes the social media videos we created as samples of the content that would be on the feed. We chose the copy to be the profile picture since that’s what’s gonna be the key driver of the campaign. We also wanted to keep the visuals of the posters unique and separate to the physical posters so the students could get two different visual experiences, but both connected with the concept of simplicity and encouragement of reconnecting oneself with one’s senses.

Then I created a voice over based on this with the elevenlabs text to speech model. For the background music and the videos I took stock material from pixabay.

Picture this: you’re sitting in a campaign review at one of India’s largest banks, looking at the brief, and thinking I could make this so much better.

That was me, every time, at ICICI Bank. As a Partnership Manager handling travel and entertainment tie-ups, I lived in the world of brand campaigns but always from the business side of the table.

Then I came to Miami on a holiday, saw Miami Ad School, and walked in on a whim. Something clicked that I couldn’t unfeel. So I did the uncomfortable thing, took a career break from a stable mid-management career and became a student again. I was second guessing my decision because of my age but as I worked on campaigns and started competing in awards, the second-guessing stopped. I’m not looking back. This career chose me!

-Sahaj Vyas

Hi my name is Alexandra Figueroa. I am an aspiring art director. I was born in Germany, then I moved to Colombia, then to Mexico then to Virginia, and then two years ago I moved to Florida. My background is in film and production. I was an art director for various short films and commercials, and now I have transitioned to advertising. I love creating visuals because I know they are the first thing audience noticed and the visuals represent the storytelling, and I love a good narrative. I am currently writing a book, but my goal in life is to create an amazing advertising campaign for a tv show that I wrote with the talented people around me work in. I hope to achieve a lot, and I still have a lot to learn about art direction, specially in terms of graphic design, but I am so excited to continue growing and creating even better visuals. Thank you.
