Summary:  A former UW Madison hospital nurse Stefanie Jones, 31, was accused of stealing syringes of morphine and hydromorphone meant for patients at the hospital on more than 40 occasions. Jones would fill the syringes with “water or another unknown liquid” after stealing the morphine by stealing at least 42 drug-filled syringes and endangering patients. Hospital staff discovered the issue when a pharmacy technician noticed someone had disturbed the red, tamper-evident caps on the syringes. That discovery led to the subsequent internal and police investigations. Jones admitted to hospital staff that she had been diverting the pain killers and taking them for herself since October 2013.

Verdict: Jones was charged with 42 felony counts of diversion of drugs and 42 counts of reckless injury. She was charged with 5 years of probation. 

Future Strategy:  One strategy that I would take with me in my future nursing career is having a strong ethical foundation. This situation is really sad because her own addiction caused her to endanger the lives of patient's and to leave these people that she swore to care for, in pain and therefore compromising their health and wellness. I will advocate for my patients, always assessing and evaluating my patients treatments and responses to treatments. Watching for patterns and trends and being alert and noticing the environment around me.
