She isn't just a whore, or a motivation for Curley to threaten the men, but a complex character in her own right. Calling Curley's wife a "slut" or a "whore" is an oversimplification, but that's not because she's looking for cheap sex - she's looking for attention. She frequently mentions how no one seems to want to talk to her. She is unhappy in her marriage. Curley treats her like a possession, like he owns her. This is representative of how a lot of women were treated at the time. When Curley tells her to do something, she should do it, no questions asked. She flirts with the other men because it's something to do that's not being bossed around by Curley all day. The reason the workers don't want to talk to her is under threat from Curley. He wants to know where she is all the time, and he gets angry whenever she talks to anyone else. What else is there to do? It's not like she can go out to town and do anything - Curley wouldn't like that. Above all this, look at the character's name. I referred to her as "Curley's wife", because we never learn her actual name. A lot back then, and even some now, women were referred to as "Mrs. [husband's name]". Like in one of the letters to Eleanor Roosevelt. One of the children refers to her as Mrs. Franklin Roosevelt. Not to blame the kids here (it was common around that time), but it makes it seem like they are just an accessory piece to the man. No, she's her own person and her name is Eleanor!
