Hello, our names are Abby, Celia, Melanie, and Ximena. Abby, Celia, and Melanie are working in the media tech pathway at the Ann Richards school for young women leaders. As well as Ximena who is working in the Biomed pathway. Abby is interested in becoming a teacher in an elementary school. Ximena wants to become a nurse in the field of a pediatrician. Melanie is awaiting what the future hopes to bring for her. Celia is interested in becoming a clinical therapist. Melanie would like to be a conservationist, studying environmental science. We all participate in color guard. A problem we are concerned about is the employment opportunities for the homeless. Despite Austin having one of the biggest homeless communities, our city doesn't provide enough support except criminalizing them and their will to love. Possible causes of this problem are bills passed such as proposition B which enables the homeless from loitering in the only place they are able to call home. This problem has negatively impacted homeless communities because they can be charged with a criminal offense in addition to a fine. Please consider joining us in researching and addressing the need to support small businesses such as the Challenger homeless newspaper to help the community overcome homelessness. We want to make customized tote bags that have gifts and necessities for them. We also want to do a fundraiser for the organization.

Hello, my name is Ivy Francis Moore, I am currently working in the Media Tech pathway at the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders. A problem that I am concerned about is access to period products. Despite a large part of the population needing consistent access to period products, they are expensive and often not accessible. In addition, period products are taxed to the point that annually, states make approximately $150 million from these taxes, because they are classified as a luxury item. This problem has negatively impacted many, as not having access to period products can range from embarrassing to unhealthy. Please consider joining me in researching and addressing lack of access to period products in our project.

Help the stray animals (Lin and Galilea)

Hello, our names are Galilea Castro and Lin Aragon and we both attend the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders. Galilea is currently working in the biomedical pathway and is interested in becoming a therapist in the field of psychology. She participates in band and cross country, which has given her skills in time management and allowed her to experience unique experiences. Lin works in the media technology pathway and has an interest in physics and would like to become a space engineer someday. They participate in theatre and it has given them the opportunity to feel comfortable giving speeches to large crowds, and have good communication skills. A problem that we are concerned about is stray animals that don’t have basic needs and shelter. Despite there being shelters for animals, there still are many stray animals or animals being put down in these shelters due to limited space. According to a recent study, there are 70 million stray animals living in the U.S. Possible causes of this problem are owners abandoning their pets and stray animals not being able to be neutered or spayed- causing there to be more stray animals, etc. This problem has negatively impacted both the stray animals and shelters, stray animals face death due to not having basic needs or being killed by outside factors (eaten, hit by a car, etc.). Shelters have also been negatively impacted due to them sometimes running out of the resources needed for all animals or having limited spaces for animals, causing them to put down animals who have been in that certain shelter for a long period of time. Please consider joining us in researching and addressing ways in which we can help stray animals receive a home or get the resources they need, and helping shelters with resources or other needs so putting down animals doesn’t become a resource they need to use.

Hello, my name is Monica Martinez, I am currently working in the Mediatech pathway at the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders. I am passionate about appreciating others. I am interested in studying business in college. I participate in marching band and newspaper which has given me skills/experience in effective communication and articulating my thoughts. Through my mission statement project, I want people to appreciate the individuals in their lives that have positively affected them. The ones that you may not have taken the time to appreciate before. Whether that be a teacher from your past, a role model, or a family member. During the past two years, many people have felt disconnected from others and because of that many people haven’t had the chance to reach out to the people that have helped them in their lives. According to the Harvard Business Review appreciation makes people feel safe, and lifts others up. Showing appreciation can also increase better sleep habits and lessen stress. Reasons why people haven’t been feeling appreciated can be due to the lasting effects of the pandemic. For example, in careers that previously had a lot of face-to-face interaction where they might hear “thank you’s” or “you’re welcome’s” no longer did which caused people to feel like they were doing a lot of work for a low reward. Please consider joining me in researching and addressing appreciation for others in our project.

Hello, we are Milo Araguz, Lucy Kimber, Katy Romero Ramos, and Lupita Acosta. We are currently students in the Media Tech pathway at the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders. We are interested in becoming lab researchers in the field of neuroscience and astronomy, a dancer, and a graphic designer in hopes of becoming a creative director. We have experience as a lieutenant in colorguard and dance, a captain in dance, and visual and fine arts, which has given us experience in leadership, communication, and creativity.

A problem that we are concerned about is the abundance of blank walls in our new building that feel particularly cold and sterile, especially to our younger students. This problem has negatively impacted our school community because our brand new building feels too open and empty and therefore creates a feeling of isolation. Possible causes of this problem are the lack of time to coordinate the creation of a permanent art piece on our walls as well as the lack of resources. Despite our school being a place full of creativity and craft-making, there is a severe lack of representation of our students’ creativity across the campus. We used to reside in a building that had permanent paintings on hallway columns and doorways and other art pieces from students displayed in the halls across campus. Art is something that connects people and makes people feel welcome, and that connection is something that is necessary after spending so much time apart. We would like to put together a mural or student artworks on a community wall that people would see on a regular basis to celebrate the importance of connection as well as contribute the first permanent art piece to this new building, both leaving the legacy of our old building filled with art in its halls and to hopefully inspire others to leave their creative mark on the school in the future. Please consider joining us in our colorful project, thank you!

Hello, our names are Axi W, Violet W, and Grace Silva, we are currently working in the media tech and biomedical pathways at the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders. We are passionate about service work concerning the environment and fostering community. Grace Silva and Axi have participated in National Honors Society and several clothing swaps over the years, which has given the experience necessary in order to host a clothing swap of our own. We are concerned about fast fashion. “Clothing production is the third biggest manufacturing industry after automotive and technology…. Textile production contributes more to climate change than international aviation and shipping combined” (House of Common Environmental Audit Committee, 2019). We propose organizing a clothing swap event for the senior class during a Community Friday. This is a zero cost event, all we need is a space to host the event and for a significant number of people to participate by bringing clothes, jewelry, accessories etc. This practice helps reduce our contributions to fast fashion and over consumption. This event will also help boost morale, clothing swaps are fun and help build a sense of community. Whatever clothes are left over will be donated to our neighborhood Goodwill. Please consider joining us.

We are in the mediatech and engineering pathways. We are passionate about creating community through art and celebrating queer identities. Cassy is interested in becoming an art therapist and believes strongly in the power of art as a form of communication. Marisol is interested in becoming an architect with a focus on community spaces and green building. Grey is interested in appreciation of nature and community. We participate in art and lead the Queer Alliance. These activities have helped us to connect with our schools queer community and create a thriving community. In this club, we often do art related activities both because these have roots in queer history and it helps to create an open environment. A problem we are concerned with is the visibility of this community. Our new building is lacking in community spaces. Our old building was full of work and posters ect that made the place feel lived in and inviting. Despite ARS having a considerably large trans population, this community is often ignored creating an extremely isolating and harmful environment. There aren’t many instances that these students can point to and say “that is overt transphobia”, but rather they are left in an atmosphere that makes them feel invisible. To solve this, we’d like to create a community installation piece focusing on trans joy. The creation of this mural would be an interactive community project. Additionally, the finished piece putting trans joy in a visible place would improve the environment of the school and help incorporate trans students into the greater school community.

Hello, my name is Chloe Williams and am currently working in the engineering pathway at the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders. I am passionate about the infrastructure of ARS and traffic during drop off and pick up times; making it efficient and safe for everyone. I am interested in urban design and becoming an urban planner or architect in the fields of city planning and architecture. I participate and have leadership roles in marching band and yearbook. Both have given me skills and experience in responsibility, problem solving, time management, and overall leadership skills. A problem that I am concerned about is the actual progress and cost of this project because of the cost and involvement with the city of Austin. Despite designated areas, drop off and pick up times at Ann Richards are extremely hectic and messy, and there are little safety precautions at the moment that make drop off and pick up efficient and safe. Possible causes of this are; not the right lanes, stop signs where there should be stop lights, overflow in the student and Wheatsville parking lot, and much more that stem off from these. This problem has negatively impacted the Ann Richards community as a whole, as well as outlying communities that may be affected by the traffic. Please consider joining me in researching and addressing the infrastructure at Ann Richards in our project.

Please consider joining me in researching and addressing this in our project, through the reconstruction of these birds’ habitats within Pflugerville parks.

Which has given us skills and experience in getting better at efficient communication, cooperation and it gives us great organization skills to organize fundraisers. A problem were concerned about is sexual assault and domestic sex and trafficking. Despite our law enforcement efforts. Domestic sex trafficking is a very relevant issue today and Austin has become a bigger hot spot for sex trafficking as our city grows. In fact there are nearly 79 thousand minors and youth victims to sex trafficking in Texas today according to the IDVSA at UT Austin school of social work. Possible causes of this problem poverty, high crime rates and lack of education. This problem has negatively targeted minors and victims of sex trafficking because once you're sex trafficked its very hard to find your way out as well as it being a very traumatizing event. Please consider joining us in researching and addressing this problem with our connection to the refuge Austin in our project.

Combatting Sex Trafficking

OUR TEAM:
We are so far, Amanda, Krystal, Virginia, Elizabeth Z, and Ria (Teri). We want to combat the spread of human trafficking in our community. Sex trafficking is a horrendous occurrence that affects the lives of many people in the world. Some strengths we hold that could benefit this project are communication, a desire to be advocates, creativity, and problem solving. Amanda is a story-teller, problem solver, and analytical thinker. Virginia has strengths in being creative, organized, and problem solving. Krystal is a hard-worker and empathizer and makes what she believes happen. Elizabeth’s strengths are being a sympathizer, peace-maker, trustworthy, and an adapter. Ria has the strengths of communication, team worker, easy to talk to, and good at helping people stay on track when they need to be.

OUR GOAL:

We want to create a more loving and aware community when it comes to tough situations like sex trafficking. We want to create safer spaces for all people in the community of Austin and especially in Austin schools. We want communities to be more open to working towards positive change and sex trafficking prevention. We are going to be working towards this change because we are passionate about helping others, specifically survivors who are in recovery, people who are in fear of trafficking, and those who are in danger of trafficking. We want to create this helpful change to aid the lives and minds from experiencing a traumatic event, and protect everyone from the danger that human trafficking presents.

IDEAS:

Our team is overflowing with ideas to reach these goals that we stated above. Some of those ideas include: Create a symbol/logo that represents support for people in recovery of sex trafficking and spread awareness/sell merchandise (possibly including bracelets, stickers, etc…) where proceeds go towards organizations working towards helping the tough recovery process, helping sex trafficking prevention organizations in any way they need, conducting a clothing drive around the Austin community to donate to women’s shelters in Austin because a large percentage of women in those shelters have experienced some abuse at some point in their lifetime, working with self defense experts to create a video about prevention to show to AISD schools (at ARS could possibly be during yoga, advisory, or STARS time), create self defense signs to put in communities with visual examples of self defense, and create sex trafficking awareness signs to place around communities that include a help hotline number. If we would like to go further, we could also provide resources (phone numbers, websites, and emails) to join recovery support groups for high school students, where they can access around AISD schools.

Thanks for your time and consideration, we would greatly appreciate any other members.

We are all very passionate about being in a career that would help aid our communities, studying Neuroscience, Environmental law, and Athletic training. We participate in basketball, volleyball, track, band, cross country, National Honor Society, Social and Emotional Learning, and many more. This has provided skills/experience in team work, dedication, and both athletic and academic excellence.

A problem that we are concerned about is providing sufficient resources for the student athletes at our school. Coming from the old school to the new school, we expected an surge of resources to be provided to the athletic training office. Unfortunately, there are still some things that the training room is missing.

Despite athletes constantly coming to the training room in search of assistance for recovery, the training room lacks some necessary tools and materials for this to occur more efficiently. Cold water immersion or cryotherapy, is used for quick recovery and the reduction of muscle pain and soreness after intense training sessions or competitions. Due to this, the training room is in need of a whirlpool table to increase the efficiency of athletes being able to sit and relax while being treated. Possible causes of this problem are lack of economic and architectural planning, and prioritizing other sectors of our school like fine arts. This problem has negatively impacted our trainer Doc White and the student athletes at Ann Richards due to our training rooms inability to provide a variety of treatments that are available to students at other schools in AISD.

Please consider joining us in implementing a whirlpool table into the training room to provide the necessary assistance for young athletes and individuals in need of rehabilitation and treatment within our local school community.

Hello, my name is Liliana Marquez. I am currently working in the Biomedical pathway at the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders. I am passionate about helping people, living my life to the fullest, (not taking anything for granted), being authentic, and making someones day better by making them laugh, give them advice, compliment them, or just listen. I am interested in study business management in college but not sure what I want to become yet, we'll see where my future takes me. I participate in Swim, Yearbook, National Honor Society which has given me skills/experience in leadership, teamwork, and management/organization. A problem that I am concerned about is the mental health crisis of students. Despite students receiving an education, a mental health crisis is occurring. Mental health is often overlooked or disregarded during school because there aren’t enough resources or time provided to address/solve it. Also students don’t feel brave enough to share their mental health ups and downs because its personal to them or the possibility of not it not being taken seriously. We need to educate teachers, and administrators about mental health, how to address it, how to identify it, what resources they should provide, what they can do to alleviate it, here are some sources that will provide more information about mental health. WholeSchool Mindfulness, Mental Health Resources School Mental Health Crisis. Possible causes of this problem are school related stress & personal issues. This problem has negatively impacted adolescents because it can lead to severe anxiety, panic attacks, depression, and more. All they need is someone who will notice them, and actually doing something to help them. Please consider joining me in researching and addressing the mental health crisis of students in our project.

We are Sofia Alvarez and Lydian DiDonato, members of the engineering and biomedical pathways at Ann Richards. We are passionate about community building. We are interested in helping to maintain the values that the school was built on for future classes. One of the challenges we have recognized is lack of access to information for parents of elementary school students about the school. Also that the demographics of Austin are changing, leading to the demographics of our school changing. We want to make sure that our school has resources to honor the school's mission. Helping first gen students get to college and providing them with resources to succeed in college is a big part of that. We want help in making sure that more detailed information about the school and application process to Ann Richards is accessible to Spanish-speaking households as well as to English speaking households. We plan to create pamphlets and videos to help guide students that are interested in applying and their parents. This way families can hear more about the school coming from students and not just our principal going to speak to elementary school students.

Hot Topic Needs Water

My name is Anya Talbot, and I've worked at the Hot Topic at Barton Creek Square Mall since January 2020. I've been Employee of the Month many times, and I've excelled at ADT and sales for a long time. I love working at Hot Topic so much, and a problem that I've noticed while working there is the lack of easily accessible water. In the back room at Hot Topic, there is a water fountain that has been out of order for at least as long as I've been here, and by the looks of it, likely much longer. This is a problem because it makes it difficult for employees to stay hydrated on the job, which was especially a problem the ac was broken. Not having a way to hydrate makes employees either dehydrated and exhausted or causes us to take time before or while working to spend our own money on drinks. Even bringing a water bottle has it' s faults, as its difficult to obtain a water bottle that'll last an 8 hour shift, so we often have to buy some water just to refill any bottle we may actually have time to pack before work. As a solution to this, I'd like to propose fixing or replacing the water fountain in the back or getting a water cooler/dispenser that employees could use in the back. I think this could be accomplished with a combination of my earnings in gift cards from the store and funding from upper management. This would also fulfill a double purpose because while doing this I could make a small curriculum for future ARS students to reference when standing up for themselves and their community in the future, specifically focusing on teens who have jobs on the side and what they can do to help improve their community.
