scott's handouts have been very useful to me, as i prefer to just get started and get into a workflow, and this helps me easily understand what im doing.

i especially found https://www.ultimate-guitar.com useful for helping me figure out all the parts in the song, and learning guitar parts, especially for the solo.

we started by discussing if we were going to write or cover. we both agreed we'd rather cover a song. we discussed what songs to do, trying to find a simple enough one for the time frame that we both enjoyed and would want to do. once we started in logic, i recorded a rough guitar track, to layer vocals over. we finished vocals, then i went home and i recorded some of my guitar parts on garageband, and exported them to put into logic. me and nico made midi drums and bass for the song. we each recorded an acoustic guitar part. i mixed the vocals, panning them slightly left and right, and added reverb to them. for the acoustic guitars, i added a slight small room reverb, and for the lead guitar, i added a distortion effect, and a large reverb to make it sound bigger.

i was overall happy with the result, but i thought i could've maybe mixed a little better, and done the back and forth on the vocals if i had time. i think the instruments all sounded pretty great. i think we overall worked very well together and pushed eachother to do more (thanks nico i wouldnt've got this done without u).

overall, our performance i think sounded good, but there was lots to work on and perfect

• My band has 9 members which I feel is quite a lot. It is good in ways and not good in other ways

• We are all very different in our musical tastes and I feel like this is good because it helps get different perspectives

• SOUND EFFECTS

• I sort of want to have a long droning soundtrack that would suit the atmosphere of the short film

• I started off by background noise. I wanted something that had similarities to an office building with the humming and buzzing so I went to the library where I used my phone to record some background ambience

• I scrunched some paper in front of the mic to replicate the sound of the event on the short film, which I thought was important

• For the sounds of the cup moving around I recorded myself moving an empty monster can around

• I recorded myself opening and close the piano to replicate the sound of the printer being closed

I started off by going through all the links on moodle, looking at all the worksheets and seeing what I wanted to use. I decided on recording my own sound effects, and went out with tymek over the course of a few weeks and found objects I thought would be suitable for such. I recorded some of the sound effects in time with the movie, to give a more realistic and accurate feel, and I used timestamps to help me figure out what i needed to get recorded and to help me put it into logic. I added effects to the sounds and changed them slightly to make them fit, I used lots of reverb and cut a lot of treble to muffle the sounds.

for the soundtrack, I experimented with using my guitar, but then switched to two choices of a piano based piece or a droning low sound. I wanted to broaden my options and see what I could do with it and make of it. I used the logic synths and cinematic fx and used beat mapping to help me align points in the movie I wanted the soundtrack to change at.

overall, I really enjoyed this project, and I thought I did a very good job at capturing the feelings of the short film in two separate ways. I think if I did this project again I would experiment more with a rock/ instrument based soundtrack, as I think that could be a cool change, and could make the viewer feel different emotions. I also would've recorded more sound effects for maybe the littler things, and spent a bit more time on getting accurate sound effects (recording them while watching the film more)

• for my more droning and cinematic soundtrack, i was very inspired by liminal spaces and internet horror, I had been reading about the backrooms at the time, and the SCP foundation. Ive always loved the fictional ideas of such spaces and stories, and Its interesting how just photos or descriptions can make you feel such strong emotions, I tried to give that same feeling with my long, droning piece.

• for my piano based soundtrack, I was heavily inspired by lots of the indie and lofi music I enjoy listening to, such as Alex g and starry cat. I wanted to see if very simple melodies and ideas could evoke specific emotions within the watcher.

we ended up deciding on ain't it fun for our first song, as it had enough vocals to do harmonies with the 4 singers, and enough guitar parts for our guitarists.

i think as a whole we used our time well, despite having to switch drummers halfway through, i think we utilized all our guitarists and vocalists well.

our performance went well, i think we sounded good and little to no mistakes were made. i think we could improve our speed intbetween songs, and maybe work on stage presence and have more coordinated actions as a band.

I think, overall my performance went great, I got all the chords right, used my dynamics and feel well, and used my voice as well and as ranged as I could (even if I was sick)

things I could work on: my power and clarity of my voice in high notes, I think I could've gotten a backing track or a drummer if I had more time, and I think I could've added more to my guitar part to suit the solo work

we decided it would be best to change our songs to be easier to do with a male voice (me) and Joyce. we tried to pick songs with simple, less layered vocals and good instrumentals to challenge ourselves.

I started by tracking all the guitars, then using a midi bass, and making midi drums with a sequencer, I put all these together, and EQ'd them and panned and mixed their volumes, and then added reverbs/delays.

next, I added vocals, which I recorded directly in, creating a clean track, and then recording another take to use for my wet mix, adding compression to both, and then reverb and slight delay on my wet track. I then added backing vocals/choir vocals with more reverb, and some distorted vocals, and panned, EQ'd, and added light FX and such to all of them

WHAT? (DESCRIBE)

for my performance, I chose the song lover, you should've come over by Jeff Buckley. the challenges I had with this song were the vocals mainly, as id memorised the chords, but the vocal melodies are a very big range, and can be difficult to accurately sing while playing. I think for the most part, it went good, and I was hitting the right notes, and the times I messed up the guitar, I played through it and kept my time.

SO WHAT? (UNDERSTAND)

before my performance, I was quite nervous, as I'm usually very anxious and don't do well with crowds. I was fairly relaxed while playing though, as I enjoy the song, and I get into the feel of it while playing. I felt very relieved after I finished my performance.

next time ill work on my vocals more, and try memorise the lyrics in order, and maybe add some backing tracks to play along with
