In the poem, "Sleeping in the Forest," Mary Oliver uses figurative language to bring the forest alive in order to develop and illustrate the underlying message. She starts the poem with personification, "the earth remembered me." This beginning shows us that she has a close relationship with the forest. She goes on to use other figurative language to take us through her night of sleeping and dreaming in the forest.
