Recently released figures show Ecuador’s tourism sector experienced huge growth between 2017 and 2018, thanks in large part to a surge in arrivals from Spain, Canada, and elsewhere in Latin America.

24 June 2019 / CA, USA /

Ecuador’s Ministry of Tourism recently announced that revenue generated from the travel and tourism sector has grown rapidly in comparison to 2017. This continues a general upward trend in Ecuador’s tourism industry, which has been growing steadily for the last decade.

Data shows that Spain is one of the most important countries propelling the growth in the tourism sector. Tourists coming from Spain almost doubled between 2017 and 2018. In 2018, there were 103,008 arrivals to Ecuador from Spain, compared to just 58,727 the year before.

On average, these tourists spend an average of a little under $1,500 per person and stay for 2 weeks.

While visitors from Spain top the tables when it comes to foreign arrivals from Europe, inbound tourists from other countries in the continent are also on the rise. Tourists to Ecuador from the UK, France, Italy, and the Netherlands also increased by around 10% or more.

Canada also represents another important source of tourism revenue for Ecuador, with visitors from the country increased by 21% between 2017 and 2018.

Incoming migrants from neighboring Venezuela also saw a huge surge, increasing by a whopping 232% in 2018 compared to 2017.

This increase in tourism spells out good news for Ecuador, as recently released figures from the Central Bank of Ecuador highlight the country’s tourism industry as one of the most important sources of national revenue. The figures place tourism as the third largest source of revenue aside from oil. It comes behind revenue generated by banana and shrimp exports.

Part of the reason for the growth in tourism is presumed to be due to the introduction of several new international airports. It’s also, in part, due to the increasing number of attractions, tours, and activities on offer in the country.
