Food waste accounted for about 12 per cent of the total waste generated in Singapore in 2024. The total amount of food waste generated in 2024 was 784,000 tonnes (784,000,000 kg).

Reducing food wastage, redistributing unsold or excess food, and treating food waste are important components of our national waste management strategies to work towards Singapore becoming a Zero Waste Nation.

Think about your breakfast, lunch or dinner yesterday. Was there any food left on your plate? Share why food sometimes gets wasted.

Food waste/scraps like fruit peels and vegetables' stems can become compost.

Compost is like super-soil that helps plants grow better! Composting is the natural process of recycling organic matter, such as food scraps, into a valuable fertilizer known as compost.

Food Composting: Machine

During the workshop last week, you have learnt on how SMART CYCLER machine works. The video is one example of automatic food composting machine.

SIC members will embark in a school wide initiative on FOOD WASTE MANAGEMENT next year. You will be given the opportunity to use the 4 SMART CYCLER machines used for this programme.

Key steps:

Put in food scraps like rice, veggie peels, and bread.
Machine breaks it down quickly.
After some time, you get compost (soil-like material).
We will use the compost to grow plants around our school!
