It started in 1180, and ended in 1185. The battle happened because the Taira and Minamoto clans were fighting for power. In 1183, the Taira lost at the Battle of Kurikara, and the loss was so severe that they found themselves under siege in Kyoto several months later. The deciding battle was the battle of Dan-no-ura. It started with the Taira having an advantage because they were more experienced sailors, but the Minamoto gained an advantage later. This is enhanced by the defection of Taguchi, a Shikoku warrior. It was from 1600-1868, and the Tokugawa shogunate was in control during the era. Tokugawa Ieyasu won the battle of Sekigahara on October 21, 1600, which gave him control of all of Japan. He retired as shogun in 1605 and gave the title to his son, Hidetada. Foreign intrusions likely contributed to the decline of the Tokugawa shogunate. It finally fell in the Boshin War when it lost to a clique trying to get political power in the name of the Imperial Court. When the Boshin War began, Japan was modernizing, following the same course as industrialized Western nations. Heian means "peace" in Japanese. It was followed the Nara Period, and began in 794 AD when the capital of Japan was moved to Heian-kyō by Emperor Kanmu. It was originally moved to Nagaoka-kyō, but a series of disasters on that city causes the emperor to move it to Heian-kyō. In late 9th century, a rebellion occurred in China, which causes the Japanese missions to Tang China to be suspended and the influx of Chinese exports to be halted. This causes the independent growth of Japanese culture. In 1185, Taira is defeated in the Genpei War, and Minamoto no Yoritomo takes control. He then became the first shogun of Japan.
