The Cycle of Violence (SMART ART)

Domestic violence typically has three stages. The first stage is tension building. During this phase the abuser will start to verbally fight with the victim. Typically the abuser will fight over things like financial issues, the kids, or employment issues. However, despite the abuse, the victim will typically try to make sure all the abuser's needs are met in order to maintain his/her own safety and limit his/her chance of becoming the victim of domestic violence. The next part of the cycle is the acute battering episode. During this episode the actual physical assault happens. Typically the assault is triggered by something completely unrelated. In turn, it leaves the victim unable to predict future episodes. The next part of the cycle is the honeymoon phase. During this phase, the abuser is left feeling shameful of his actions, and typically the abuser will try to blame the victim for what he/she has done. However, the abuser can also go a completely different route. After the assault, the abuser may even beg the victim for forgiveness, express profound love for the victim, and the abuser may even be able to convince the victim that the abuse will never happen again by saying and doing those things. This phase alone can make the victims continuously go back to their abusive relationships, and is a prime example of why all abuse needs to be reported (Roundtable, 2008).

Unmet Domestic Violence Shelter Requests

Unfortunately, there are so many requests for shelter from victims of domestic violence that shelters are actually unable to provide support for them. On average, in the US alone, 13.2% of victims of domestic violence are unable to be provided shelter. As a result, the victims stay with their abuser and risk being the victims of a domestic violence situation until they are able to find the means to leave (Institute for Children, 2010). This is a sad reality, and we as people need to figure out a way to accommodate these victims in order to prevent more injuries and deaths from happening .

Most people think that domestic violence only comes in one form. However, that is not the case at all. Domestic violence comes in many different forms. Some of which are listed within this power and control wheel. This wheel shows not only the ways an abuser can control his/her victim, but it also gives examples on how they may do so (Domestic Abuse Intervention Programs, 2011).

Most individuals assume domestic violence happens mainly to women. However, statistics show that every 15 seconds a man is a victim of domestic violence. Interestingly enough, that statistic is the same for women. Therefore, men and women are equally able to be victims of domestic violence. This video shows a few men that are victims of domestic violence. In addition, it shows women that are in jail for being the abuser in the relationship (YesIamJames, 2012). As a society, we really should be looking out for more signs of domestic violence among men. It is sad to think they have no one to turn to, and I wish I could help.

According to the World Health Organization, South Asia has the highest percentage of IPV rates world wide, and North America has the lowest. However, even though America has the lowest rates, it is still estimated that 8.3 billion dollars a year is spent on domestic violence related costs. Therefore, not only is domestic violence impacting the individuals, it is also directly impacting the economy (PUBLICHEALTHWATCH, 2014).

Kenya has had a continuously growing domestic violence issue within the rural areas. In 2006 there was only 299 reported incidents. However, it increased to 412 in 2007, and was beyond 400 in 2008. Due to no laws being put in place, the increase in violence, and the increase of people reporting, it will continue to grow. In Kenya, it is still seen as discipline when an individual beats his wife. Their reasoning behind this irrational discipline is because of their very strong belief in living in a patriarchal society. Interestingly enough, the women even believe in it as well. For example, some women who have not been abused by their husbands recently, will explain to their peers that their husbands have lost love for them. It is literally ingrained in the woman's mind from childhood that being beat by her husband is either because she needs to be disciplined, or it is just the man showing love (Voice of America, 2010). It is interesting to see how gender roles differ within different parts of the world. I never knew that some people that live in Kenya still believe that being beaten is ok. It is a really sad reality, and I hope they get more resources in Kenya soon.
http://www.voanews.com/content/cases-of-domestic-violence-increase-in-kenya-86691287/113574.html

Domestic violence directly impacts the over all health of every individual exposed to such treatment. Not only does it impact them psychologically, it also impacts they way the act, their sex drive, and their kids. In Riyadh, which is located in Saudia Arabia, there was a study done on domestic violence. During this study, the results showed that 1 in five of the women were victims of domestic violence. Out of the 720 individuals given the questionnaire 41% of them said they did nothing in reaction to the violence, and only 56% said they were trying to get a divorce. This means that almost half of the individuals decided that doing nothing, and staying with the person, would be better than reporting it, and getting out of the relationship. In conclusion, it is clear that the women residing in Saudi Arabia need to have resources put in place for those willing and also for those that are not willing to leave their spouse (Health, 2015).
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26021859
