In 1995, American psychiatrist Ivan Goldberg coined the term "Internet Addiction Disorder" (I.A.D.), taking pathological gambling as a reference model. Internet addiction is described as "an abuse of this technology", with important negative consequences on one's life.

WHEN YOU BECOME ADDICTED TO THE INTERNET?

Anxiety, depression, stress are definitely predictive factors: when you go through a time of difficulty, the computer and its unlimited resources can greatly reduce the state of hardship experienced, anxiety or the sense of loneliness, offering opportunities for recreation and lightening of the mind (a fast soothing that deviates from the problem experienced at that time). In this way there is the risk of establishing a vicious circuit whereby every time one is in a conflictual situation, one prefers to go back to distraction, creating a dependency, not a solution to the problem - which instead remains and, on the contrary, is so nourished.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

Generally, when an internet addiction develops, there are symptoms that cause both physical and mental discomfort (weight loss, sleep, headaches, problems with sight, are some examples).
As already mentioned, when you become addicted to the web you lose contact with reality, so you have difficulty working (it is difficult to perform the tasks assigned), you lose interest and contact with relatives, friends and companions that "populate" real life.
We often lose track of time, we spend hours on the computer without realizing it, we forget to perform important activities, in the most serious cases even to feed ourselves or take care of ourselves.
Everything about the internet becomes the only source of energy and satisfaction, while slowly losing interest in the surrounding world.

HOW TO GET OUT OF THE ADDICTION?

Like all addictions, to get out of the vicious circuit that Internet addiction creates is necessary to strengthen their internal structures (in this case often concern self-esteem) and replace the old strategies that create dependency, the new more functional.
For example, it is important to regulate the time spent on the internet, limit its use and confine it at specific times of the day, or devote to it only after having performed the necessary tasks. It is useful to begin to engage in alternative activities that can provide healthy solutions to feelings of boredom and loneliness (sports activities or hobbies of various kinds).
Then resorting to the help of a therapy or support groups, especially in the most serious cases, is essential to support and help the person to get out of internet dependence in a stable and lasting way over time.
