Motivation:

Pony’s motivation is his love for the gang. Pony loves the gang and his family a lot. This quote shows that. “I love Soda more than I've ever loved anyone, even Mom and Dad (3)”, This shows Pony’s love for his family/gang. Towards the end of the book, Johnny dies and Pony is very upset, which shows his love for Johnny and the gang. Also, Dally is shot by the police and Pony is hurt by this, another event that shows that he loves the gang. Pony is very sympathetic to the gang and it is his motive.

Strengths:

One of Pony’s major strengths is that other people depend on him for optimism. This helps if people are feeling down. This is one quote that shows. "I can't take much more." Johnny spoke my own feelings. "I'll kill myself or something.” "Don't, I said, sitting up in alarm. You can't kill yourself, Johnny." "Well, I won't (42)” This quote shows that Pony can convince people to do things, which is a strength. Everyone in the gang loves Pony, and that makes him welcome in the gang, so people trust him. Two events that shows Pony’s strength are that Pony convinced Johnny not to kill himself and when Pony and his friends convince the people in court not to put them in a boy’s home.

Flaws:

One of Pony’s flaws is that he gets lost in thought too much in thought. This is a flaw because he can forget things. A piece of textual evidence that shows this is: “ "I said I didn't mean to…”"I didn't mean to!" Darry shouted, and I almost shook. "I didn't think! I forgot!(44)” This is when Pony stayed out too late and fell asleep because of daydreaming, and Darry got mad at him. Another event is when Pony convinces himself by dreaming and smoking that Johnny isn’t dead, which is bad for him, and when Pony thinks about how many times Soda has started to tell him something when he is daydreaming. That is bad because he is ignoring his brother.

Type of Character:

Ponyboy’s character type is protagonist, dynamic, and round. We know he is the protagonist because the story is centered around him. He is a dynamic character because he is always undergoing a change. He is also a round character because we know lots of his traits. At the beginning of the book he likes fights but at the end he thinks they are useless. A couple events that show this are: at the beginning when Pony describes himself, all the emotions during the story, and the first-person POV that is directed at him.

Personality Test Review:

Pony’s personality test showed that he is a mediator. The test said, “Mediator’s friends will be rewarded with calm, sensitivity and depth, and an ever-present desire to help, learn, and grow.“ “You're a nice kid, Ponyboy. Do you realize how scarce nice kids are nowadays?” Cherry said. She is saying he is a nice guy to have around. Th is is an example of how Pony comforts people, “He was crying. I held him like Soda had held him the day we found him lying in the lot.” Pony is comforting Johnny after killing a guy for him. Calmness, optimism, and sensitivity are very good traits for one of your friends or yourself to have because it can affect people around you and overall make the world a better place, which is Pony’s goal.
