Numa Pompilius, the second king of Rome circa 700 BC, added the two months Januarius and Februarius. ·The fifth month of the Gregorian calendar, May, is named after a goddess named Maia. 
·But which goddess named Maia? There are actually two. 
·The Greek goddess Maia was one of the Pleiades, the companions of Artemis. This Maia was the mother of Hermes, the messenger of the Gods. But the Romans had yet another goddess named Maia, who just happened to share a name with the Greek goddess. 

·The Roman Maia was named for the Latin word for large, maius, and she was associated with growth and the spring. As the Romans adopted many elements of Greek culture, the two goddesses became conflated and gave their name to the fifth month.

·However, there is another suggestion that the month is not named for these intertwined goddesses at all. The Latin poet Ovid claimed that the month may have been named after the Latin word maiores, “elders,” to juxtapose it to the month of June, which was named after iuniores, the Latin word for youth.

The Romans gave this month the Latin name Aprilis but the derivation of this name is uncertain. The traditional etymology is from the verb aperire, "to open", in allusion to its being the season when trees and flowers begin to "open", which is supported by comparison with the modern Greek use of άνοιξη (ánixi) (opening) for spring. Whereas the Emperor Augustus Caesar, in the month of Sextillis . . . thrice entered the city in triumph . . . and in the same month Egypt was brought under the authority of the Roman people, and in the same month an end was put to the civil wars; and whereas for these reasons the said month is, and has been, most fortunate to this empire, it is hereby decreed by the senate that the said month shall be called Augustus.

Mensis (=month in latin) November took his name from novem (=nine), because until the 2nd century BC was the 9th month of the year in the Roman Calendar. The year has 12 months and first was beginning in March, that is from the beginning of the spring. like in our days it has, as follows: 1st Martius, 2nd Aprilis, 3rd Maius, 4th Junius, 5th Quintīlis, 6th Sextīlis, 7th September, 8th Octōber, 9th November, 10th December, 11th Januarius, 12th Februarius. After 2nd century BC Januarius and it became the 11th month of the year but retained its name. November has 29 days. A day was added to November during the calendar reform in the mid-40s BC by the Julius Caesar.
