• Ruth to Walter: “Honey…life don’t have to be like this. I mean sometimes people can do things so that things are better…You remember how we used to talk when Travis was born…about the way we were going to live…the kind of house…Well, it’s all starting to slip away from us…” p. 89

This quote shows that Ruth is a responsible woman. She knows her and Walter can barely stay under the same roof let alone have another child and feed it and raise it properly. Raising Travis was already tough on its own. Ruth always thinks ahead and thinks about what the best option is.

This piece of art relates to Ruth because it's a picture of a mother and her child. I feel like Ruth is a good mother even though it's tough love between her and her son it's because she really does love him. I also feel as if a lot of more responsibility as came along when you are a mother

Why the song relates to Ruth

I think this song relates to Ruth because people misjudge Ruth gets treated differently because of her skin tone. Even though people say things I feel like she's really came to terms with it. I feel the topic is not as hard for her to discuss because of her personality. I think that's she's very bold and says whatever is on her mind. I also think she is very serious and faces the reality head on in problems.

I feel as if the theme of the book is injustice/ racism. "Mama: “Son, how come you talk so much ‘bout money?” Walter: “Because, it is life, Mama!” Mama: “Oh—so now its life. Money is life. Once upon a time freedom use to be life—now its money. I guess the world really do change…” Walter: “No—it was always money, Mama. We just didn’t know about it.” p. 74 This quote supports the theme. In the text Mama says "Once upon a time freedom used to be life". They get treated poorly because of there skin color and have to work harder then white people have to.
