In my opinion, the best part of chapter 8 regarding adolescents is the section regarding body image issues. Adolescents and the teenage years are a time period that is very prone to change. The way we think changes as well as our bodies and reading about this topic in the textbook has allowed me to reflect on my own teenage years. Furthermore, I liked learning about the differences that boys and girls experience in this time period and how it affects their confidence. One interesting fact I learned is that the thin ideal has epigenetic roots meaning that stress during pregnancy can lead to a child with eating issues (pg. 238). Another topic I found interesting under the umbrella of body issues is the types of eating disorders and the effect they have mentally and physically (pg. 239 titled Eating Disorders).

My favorite piece of information from Chapter 9 is about how to allow a teenager to thrive on page 263. This section of the chapter teaches that allowing a teen to be nurtured and work on their talents is what truly allows them to thrive. I liked learning about how even the most troubled teens can grow to become successful and responsible adults(pg. 263). Furthermore, this section goes on to explain how a nurturing adult makes all the difference for a teenager and how this “good example” can be a parent, sibling, or even a non-family mentor. They go on to speak about how fostering racial pride can also help a child thrive, particularly if they feel excluded due to the fact that they look different than others. Lastly, I liked seeing that even though a teen might engage in risk-taking behaviors, this does not take away from their ability to become a successful adult. Taking these risks is a part of growing up and it allows someone to explore and form their sense of self.

Quiz 1:

I found that this quiz had some very specific questions that I was unsure of how to answer. Furthermore, I found that the result is not something that I would consider to be accurate. This quiz claimed that I scored high on the social aspect. I would consider myself to be a shy person who avoids social interactions at all costs. However, I am very intrigued in learning about others and helping them sort out their problems and I think it was accurate in this case.

Quiz 2: I received a similar score on the second test and I feel the same way about it as the first. I think that I'm more comfortable working with children and thought about this from that kind of perspective. If I was thinking about social interactions with adults, then I don't believe that the results would be the same. I, however, think that this is a good way to look at job options if I ever change my mind about my career or am looking for something more ‘fulfilling’.

To relate this information back to chapter 10 of the reading, the section of the chapter titled “finding a career” talks about finding “flow” and searching for a job that is intrinsically motivating (pg. 292). After reading, I noticed that the entire point of these tests is to choose a job or career path that would be intrinsically rewarding for the person taking them. This is because it builds on their sense of self as well as personal achievements or hobbies.

The career path that I am pursuing is nursing, particularly pediatric nursing. After looking at a website called explorehealthcareers.org, I was able to learn some important information about the job I am pursuing and what it entails education and mental wise as well as working conditions, pay scale, etc. Firstly, the job of pediatric nursing entails physical examinations of children ranging from infancy to adolescence in which diagnostic tests are taken to develop treatment plans. This job also requires good communications skills and an understanding of children and the way in which you can gain their trust. In order to be a pediatric nurse, you need to have been to an accredited nursing school in which you then take the NCLEX (licensing exam) and then search for a job in that particular specialty. According to the site, the average salary in this field ranges from 52-88 thousand dollars. I learned a few new things about this job, one being that burnout is common among pediatric nurses, so it is important to maintain good and stable mental health.

https://explorehealthcareers.org/career/nursing/pediatric-nurse/

The stage of life that I find to be “ideal” would probably be adolescence. The reason I chose this life stage is because I think that it is one of the most eye-opening as well as the one that many people remember and hold on to for a big part of their life. The experiences in adolescence shape the kind of people we become in adulthood. One really important part of adolescence is social development. According to the textbook on page 270, one big part of adolescence is looking for autonomy in our life. Independence is a big part of this stage of life and it helps shape our relationship with others. This includes our family, friends, and any other relationships we might make in the future. I liked relating this chapter of the book to my personal life. One page 271, the textbook talks about how as a parent, during adolescence you should give your child the space to grow and change while also being nurturing to them. This is something that I feel like my parents are pretty good at and I can see the effect it has had on myself as well as my siblings.

The first topic I really enjoyed learning in this class was the one regarding attachment styles. I liked taking this information and using it to reflect on my personal life. I looked at myself as well as the people I surround myself with and what our possible attachment styles could be. Doing so, I was able to strengthen my connection with those types of people as well as think deeply about the kind of people I want in my inner circle. Furthermore, I thought about how a child’s attachment style can affect the kind of adult they grow up to be (pg. 108). The second topic I enjoyed was the stages of pregnancy and prenatal development. The reason I chose this topic is because I have always been intrigued in how a baby is formed in the womb and the processes in which it occurs. For one, I liked learning about the different stages that a zygote goes through (pg. 38) and the effect it has on the female body.

If I were to provide some feedback on the course, the only thing I would say to do is to add a few more personal assignments. I think that you did a good job explaining the topics and choosing assignments that catered to different learning styles. I didn't really dislike anything about the course. One thing I loved about this class and how you taught was during the one-on-one zoom assignment. You made me feel really comfortable and confident in myself during that assignment, and I couldn't have asked for a better teacher.
