In this concept map, I will be discussing the different ways in which culture and attitude influence the health practices and treatments of diseases in various places. In some instances, certain culture's treatment of diseases can be beneficial, while in other cases, it may be severely problematic. This is seen in some traditional medicine which may be very different from western medicine, and also seen in the beliefs and attitudes that influence treatments all around the world.

Mental Illness in Africa

This article serves as an example of a problematic way in which culture can effect treatment of a disease. This article talks about Africa's struggles with multiple obstacles which prevent them from treating mental illnesses properly. These obstacles take the form of stigma, discrimination, lack of funding and trained specialists, and lack of education on the topic. This causes people who are struggling with their mental health to maybe not even be able to identify that they need help, and if they do, most likely wont seek the help they need. This is a huge problem which needs to be addressed, as mental health is hugely important for the overall health of a population.

This image displays the results of a survey of African-Americans stating that 63% of respondents stated they viewed depression as a personal weakness and another 30% stated that they would deal with depression on their own. This proves that the culture of Africa has created certain stigmas around mental illness which has caused people to avoid seeking the help they need. This is far different from the ways in which other places such as the U.S. perceives mental illness, as they have created much more awareness which has caused much less stigma.

Culture can effect the way one's symptoms manifest, the ways in which one chooses to communicate it, how or where to get the help they need, how they cope with it, the stigma around the metal illness, and the support they receive from their family or community.
