It is not just about the exposure to careers, but the life skills a person can gain from CTL that will help them with job readiness when the time comes. Those practicing contextualized learning use methods that relate their subjects being taughtto situations in a workplace or real world setting that pushes students to apply this knowledge to their career goals.

As we grow and learn, so does our brain. Brain plasticity explains how neurons and synapses in the brain are able to change. In children these changes happen quickly and are a critical point in development. Children will continue to learn but need ways that help them connect meaning to what they learn. Through contextualized learning children are able to make those connections and store what they learn in their long-term memory.

The purpose of Problem Based Learning is to present students with a real-world problem that is relevant to the current material being presented while asking the students to critically think and solve the problem. The use of PBL's is very common in medical schools and other programs where the students are "required to be avid problem solvers in their field".

Another aspect of Contextualized Learning is the idea of Self-regulated learning. This style of learning has been defined as, "the integration and utilization of cognitive, metacognitive, motivational, perceptual, and environmental components in the successful resolution of academic tasks". This definition basically means that Self-regulated Learning is the students ability to take responsibility for their own learning. Research has shown that once a student takes responsibility for their learning, they begin to use their own metacognition skills. This process ultimately leads to being able to internalize individual goals.
