I know this is a very out of the blue "symbol", but I feel that it is appropriate for how Baba views Amir as Baba views Hassan probably more as his own than Amir due to the fact that Hassan is more athletic and less introverted than Amir is. In a way, Hassan is the son that Baba wanted, and Amir was simply the son he got.

During chapters 1-8 of the novel The Kite Runner, written by Khaled Hosseini, the relationship between Baba and Amir is illustrated to the audience mainly through the use of Character to Character dialogue. Initially at the beginning of the novel, the audience is treated to how Baba really feels about Amir through an interaction between Baba and Rahim Khan where Baba stated how Amir was always "buried in those books," and how whenever Amir gets into trouble, "Hassan steps in and fends them off" (Hosseini 21-22). However, midway through these chapters, Amir manages to win a kite-fighting tournament which, in a way, redeems Amir in the eyes of Baba. However, this redemption was short lived as Amir then requested to change the servants to which Baba responded by stating how Amir “Brought me [Baba] shame . . .” (Hosseini 90). Throughout these chapters it is clear that Baba wanted a son who could live up to his very masculine expectations such as when he stated how he “wasn’t like that at all” (Housseini 22) when referring to how Amir preferred reading over more physical activities. Amir always preferred to read and write over sports and other physical activities to which Baba would always give a “feigned smile” to. Although this disappointment does change a bit after Amir won that kite-fighting tournament, as shown through the embrace at the end of chapter seven, that moment of jubilation was quickly taken away the moment Amir asked to replace Amir and Hassan (due to Amir’s own guilt).

It's quite obvious that Baba's green world is that where he has a son which could live up to his very masculine expectations and to make him proud. His mad world, by contrast, is kind of the world he exists in now; a world where Amir couldn't live up to those expectations and when he did, he quickly shattered that by asking to replace Ali, a childhood friend, and Hassan.

Amir is presented to the audience as a round character. The audience hears all of his thoughts, both negative and positive which allows the audience to see a more in-depth character. Currently, Amir is a dynamic character. The audience will see him grow and change as a character and it has been seen in the past as his character changed from something more naïve and driven to make his father proud into more of a guilt-ridden character who is, in a way, lost and chooses to bury himself in work.
