Topic: Scientific Method - 2021                                                       Will The Water Spill Over?

Question:

Will a glass of water filled to the rim, immediately spill over if more water is poured into it?

Hypothesis:

The class voted yes that if a glass was filled with water -the water will immediately spill over if more water is poured into it. 

Materials:

A.      1 Measuring cup

B.       1 tray

C.       1 clear tall or short glass

D.      1 a pitcher of cold water ( at least 1 cup of cold water ) 

E.        3-4 Paper towels  ( in case of possible spills or leakage )

 | Yes-  the water  will spill over the rim  immediately   

    6 = Yes

   No-  the water  will not spill over the rim   immediately                 0 = No

Procedure:

         Step 1. Gather all the materials and put them on the table.

            Step 2. Then place the tray in the middle of the table.

            Step 3.  Put an empty glass in the middle of the tray

            Step 4.  Pour 1 cup of cold water from the pitcher into the measuring cup.

            Step 5.  Slowly pour the water from the measuring cup into the glass.

            Step 6. Fill the glass up to the rim.

           Step 6.  Then carefully pour water into the glass until it goes over the rim.                    

 

 Results:

        As the water was poured into the glass to the rim, we then paused to allow it to settle. Then we poured more water into the middle of the glass. Soon a dome shape of water started to develop over the rim of the glass

 We were surprised to learn that the water did not spill over the sides immediately. Our hypothesus was not correct. But we larned that water will try to stay stuck together for as long as it can.

Purpose:

The purpose of the experiment was to explain that although water is a liquid- it has a very thin “ skin “  called surface tension that allows it to stick together.

Water is made up of two kinds of atoms, hydrogen and oxygen. The name for the water molecule is H20. The water molecule has 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom. Water molecules are attracted to each other because hydrogen atoms and oxygen atoms are attracted to each other and hug close together really tight. This is called cohesion. The molecules hug so close together they don't want to touch other molecules around them.
