Wilhema Yazzie started the session by first introducing herself and her family. She showed photos of her family, including the son that prompted her to address the shortcomings of our state's education system. She was accompanied by lawyers who represented the Yazzie/Martinez families, and they explained what the outcome of the ruling yielded and discussed shortcomings by both the state and schools.

Building Systems for Mental Health: The 5 core competencies are self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, relationship skills, social awareness. The presenters gave an example of a bear that was locked up for 20 years and when it was released into the wild, it just kept roaming in a circle because that's all it ever knew. This tied into our students in the classroom as it relates to our misserved youth. If our students' needs are never addressed, but rather always neglected, that's all they're ever going to know. Then, if a teacher comes in and threatens their only known way of learning by actually caring and asking about their needs, the student is going to go into defense mode and make them act out. It is also important for all teachers to be aware of the fact that every student can get mental health services regardless of IEP. Additionally, one teacher within the session expressed his frustration at how his administration is not very understanding or supportive, so it is hard to give his students "therapy" while having enough time to teach subject-related content. However, this can be accomplished simultaneously as explained by another teacher. It is possible to teach soft skills and life skills while teaching content. This will set the tone for a safe classroom environment even if it's just greeting students by name, or instilling self-belief or connecting and building authentic relationships with students. It is so important that our students feel like we are trusted adults in order to avoid those power struggles. Emotional needs need to be addressed first before diving straight into content or else the student's work isn't going to be a true reflection of their knowledge.

During this session, I found that SEL is an important part of students development. In early stages of development it is important that children start to learn about self-awareness. social awareness, responsible decision-making, self-management, and relationship skills. The two schools that presented, I had never heard of and I really liked their approach to learning and giving students the freedom to explore who they are. Teachers are also exploring SEL within themselves.

My third session was about doing community projects. Students were taught the steps and processes of doing the projects. They had to think of a problem in the community that they could help make a change, gather research by interviewing people, and come up with a conclusion (solution).

Important Class Strategies:

The Classroom Community Playlist- helps empower students while giving individuals part of the classroom a voice. A net of safety and inclusivity.
Writer's Graffiti- promotes creative expression and multiple means of representation. This is a non-verbal strategy that includes drawing/writing about a prompt. Requires brainstorming and cold calling.
Give one, get one- reviewing and clarifying info, accessing prior knowledge, reviewing and learning, providing direct instruction. The process includes of gather supplies, fill in your own ideas, move around the room, share and trade, thank your partner, find a new partner, and share.
Musical shares- musicality and share ideas.
Make a silent appointment- choice, movement, sociocentric promoting practice. The process includes looking silently at each other, giving 'yes' cue and on the snap go silently to your partner.

Navigating Learning Paths and Empowering Students with a UDL Compass

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework that guides educators in designing learning experiences that meet the needs of all learners. It helps teachers move from a one-size-fits-all approach toward one that adapts to learner variability. UDL embraces the idea that we should have firm goals for students—using flexible means to reach those goals. The result is more equitable and engaging classrooms. During this session we got a walk through of what it could be like for students who meet different needs to be able to learn and what this entails on both the students end (what alternative methods should look like) and the teachers (what prepping for a lesson like this would look like).
