Germans later came in after missionaries (1890s) to exploit the wild and plantation grown rubber supply. After the Treaty of Versailles (1919), Tanzania began its growth back to independence (1961).

The German colonization, though brutal, opened way to mass farming and some decent economic revenue.

In the past, independence, though reached quickly, was a large power-grab, which resulted in a economically frightened leader; Nyerere. He nationalized many, if not all, holdings, and upped socialist farming. He also began severing national diplomatic ties and refusing foreign aid. Mwinyi inherited the country (1986) in desperate need; out of money, out of food, out of resources.

The integration back to democracy was slow-going, and while Nyerere was in power it was non-existent. Nyerere refused help due to pride of himself over the good of people. In 1992 the first truly democratic election was held, and successor to Mwinyi, Mkapa, continued work on economy and slowly get the country out of it’s dip.

Tanzania has come a very long way from where they were in 1961, expanding to a true democratic election system and getting young people out of poverty and in the workforce. Yet with this, terrorist groups began attacking the country as recently as 1998, with a domestic protest against possible election fraud killing more than 40.

A solution to the ongoing crisis with terrorism would be a more rigid government, with more focus on military presence to threats, as well as a more responsive government in general.
