Amika George who started the free period campaign to end period poverty in the UK by lobbying the government to provide free menstrual products to children/young people from low-income families. She argued that the government had a legal obligation to do this under the Equality Act. This did make a difference to an extent as the government eventually started to plan to introduce this in English and Welsh schools and to scrap the tax on these products to make them more affordable. However, we are still to see if these plans will be carried out effectively. This shows that young people's passion and political action is powerful but that overall they cannot fully guarantee that the government will address their concerns in the way they would like.

There are many however I will go with Malala Yousafzai. This is because she never gave up in her fight for female rights ro education even though she encountered numerous threats from Taliban groups for example and was even shot. I find this really inspirational as she spoke up for her community and for girls internationally about their right to education.

Mhairi Black running (and winning!) the vote for MSP for Paisley and Renfrewshire at age 20 whilst in her final year of university and becoming the youngest MP. She uses her platform to make a difference, advocating for LGBT rights and Scottish Independence. She also demonstrates young people’s value in elected positions, and that a finished higher education is not always a prerequisite for holding office.

A young woman who led the campaign to make upskirting part of the Sexual Offences Act. After realising that a man who had taken a photo up her skirt without her consent had not committed any crime according to UK law, she launched a petition that reached 50,000 signatures in days, and was eventually picked up by MPs and backed by celebrities. Upskirting is now a criminal offence.

I've been really inspired by Marcus Rashford since his school meals campaign this summer. I think he's highlighted the issue so powerfully, and I'm looking forward to seeing him continue to vocally stand up for working class young people and children living in poverty.

In the summer of 2011, Boyan Slat, a 17-year-old from the Netherlands,
Go scuba diving in Greece,
He had expected to see Greece's famous sky and sea,
The result:"More plastic bags than fish."
He was shocked by what he saw,
And what was even more shocking was that everyone said to him,
"Once plastic gets into the ocean, there is nothing you can do about it."
It was this remark that angered the boy.
Over the past 30 to 40 years, millions of tons of plastic have entered the ocean. Of the 288 million tons of plastic currently produced globally each year, 10 per cent ends up in the oceans. And 80% of this comes from the land, through sewers, through rivers, into the sea,
Every water bottle you throw away, every soda can you throw away, every cigarette butt you end up with in the ocean. The most notorious is the Pacific Garbage Patch between Hawaii and California.
There, you could even call it plastic soup,
Stretching for millions of square kilometres,
If you are going to take a boat to clean up,
It takes thousands of years.
In plastic soup, the animals' condition is worse than ever.
This is a dead albatross.
In its belly, people found an abundance of personal supplies.
This is a turtle trapped in plastic and fishing nets.
The baby sea lion tried to struggle back into the water because the beach is already covered with plastic.
Boyan Slat could not sit still. Instead of taking the initiative, why not develop a technology that lets the plastic waste itself into a net? Because ocean currents can pull together trash floating on the surface of the sea, he designed a collection device that captures trash on the surface while currents and Marine life pass under it. The trapped waste will be recycled or made into oil.
When he entered delft University of Technology in the Netherlands to study aerospace engineering, he did not look to the sky. The ocean was what he had set out to do in his life since 17 -- start alone, and make a difference in two-thirds of the world's oceans.
Yes, he was going to save the ocean! He wants it to become a reality.
He started riding around on his bicycle, explaining his concept of ocean cleanliness to people at TEDx.
He had only 200 euros for his pocket money, which quickly ran out, so he tried to get sponsorship.
Nobody paid him any attention.
"I remember one day reaching out to 300 companies, and only one responded to me."
They could not believe that this childishly looking child was going to change the whole ocean.
"A year ago, I was not sure it would work, but at least I had to try."
Little did he know that on March 26, 2013, his TedX talk went viral, and all of a sudden, thousands of people were clicking on his website every day, and 1,500 emails were coming in every day, asking to be volunteers to help him achieve his big dream.
Within 15 days, he had received $80,000.
They already have a laboratory of more than 100 people, mostly volunteers, scattered around the world and based in Australia.

Young People who speak out

There are many young people that are inspiring. All the young people that are vocal about political issues online and who organise protests and campaigns. The Black Lives Matter protestors earlier this year and the students who protested about the exam results over the summer are good examples of young people making a difference this year.

Mhairi Black SNP MP absolutely love her passion and how she delivers a speech. Her work for WASPI women and LGBTQ+ as well as food banks etc. shows how knowledgeable she is and how well she researches before speaking.
Future FM of Scotland. She doesn't let men in suits intimidate her.

Another fine citizen is Malala Yousafzia who was shot by the Taliban in 2012 for speaking up for girls rights to education. Clearly a brave young woman with great parents who supported her learning. she began speaking out at around the age of 11. an inspiration to us all. Sadly people in the west don't appreciate education and realize its value. Perhaps we need to show our young people the values of education in a positive light. not in league tables and post code lottery results.

Erin Bleakley and the SQA protestors

When watching Darren McGarvey's Class Wars I was really impressed by the secondary school student Erin Bleakley who took part in the protests over the grading controversy in 2020. I thought it was great to see how young people who had experienced the downgrading of their predicted results due to their background coming together and so quickly proving how necessary it was for this decision to be reversed.

YP to a certain extent used their voice in the independent care review which of course resulted in the promise. And is a good example of where the government effectively engaged young people and in particular hard to reach young people

Nalleli Cobo is an environmental activist in the UK. She used to live in Los Angeles. Due to air pollution caused by many gas and oil wells, citizens had health issues. She also had nose blood, palpitation, asthma, and reproductive health issues. It was also problematic because in Los Angeles there are a lot of immigrants and it is estimated that the oil company and the medical institutions look lightly at the lives of the citizens. She began to work on this problem at 9 years old and finally succeeded in stopping the operation.

Jenni Smith - Youth Worker and Activist

Jenni Smith is my personal hero. She's a very well-known local figure and youth worker in the Isle of Man for her work running Soundcheck, a music-based youth club that provides a space for young people to hang out, try instruments and perform in bands at local venues. She is also a true punk activist who fights for marginalised people and social causes all over the island, and personally changed my life by taking me to my first appointment with social services and helping me when I was homeless. This photo is of Jenni being awarded the 30 Under 30 Isle of Man award for her community activism. She has impacted an entire generation of young people, especially LGBT young people, on the Isle of Man for the better and helped create our very first Youth Pride and Pride festivals.
