For Stage 2, we studied an event which occured in Ireland in the 1840's called The Great Famine. It is known as An Gorta Mór in our native language. During this time, many Irish people died of the hunger. People did not have enough food to eat. They depended on the potato and a disease called blight destroyed the crops. They were very poor and many could not afford to eat or keep their homes. Over 1 million people died. Another 1.5 million people emigrated. This means they went to live in a different country. This is a very sad time in our history. There are lots of songs and poems dedicated to this time.
