To what extent is Mandela a truly radical figure and how did he not rise to conformity?

Nelson Mandela changed the way that white people viewed others. Not just people of colour but the entire nation. Him and eight other African National Congress leaders were convicted of sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government, and were sentenced to life in jail in 1964. Mandela, while increasingly politically involved from 1942, only joined the African National Congress in 1944 when he helped to form the ANC Youth League (ANCYL).

In 1944 he married Evelyn Mase, a nurse. They had two sons, Madiba Thembekile "Thembi" and Makgatho, and two daughters both called Makaziwe, the first of whom died in infancy. He and his wife divorced in 1958.

Mandela rose through the ranks of the ANCYL and through its efforts, the ANC adopted a

more radical policy, the Programme of Action, in 1949.

In 1952 he was chosen as the National Volunteer-in-Chief of the Defiance Campaign with Maulvi Cachalia as his deputy. This campaign of civil disobedience against six unjust laws was a joint programme between the ANC and the South African Indian Congress. He and 19 others were charged under the Suppression of Communism Act for their part in the campaign and sentenced to nine months of hard labour, suspended for two years.

Mandela was not given any encouragement and no support .

In prison, Mandela stood out among prisoners and guards as a man of principle and dignity, willing to sacrifice his life for his beliefs. Despite harsh prison life, Mandela found energy to challenge his keepers. He was unwilling to accept the status quo and his presence on Robben Island held a mirror up to the face of apartheid’s leaders. Through word, deed and symbol, he challenged the system that denied him liberty and freedom to live the way he wanted to and in a place he wanted to. Nelson Mandela was never violent to get what he wanted but that doesn't mean other people weren't. When people didn't agree with his methods and beliefs they would physically, verbally and mentally hurt him.

The effects that Nelson Mandela has had since he left prison were massive. Not only South Africa was changed but the entire world's view on equality shifted drastically when Mandela was released from prison.

At the age of 65, Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in working to defeat apartheid. His service was recognised eventually but he had to spend a long time fighting for what he believed in and he had to stay strong to his morals. I think this has shown lots of people today how that if you want something so badly, whether it would be fighting for something or even achieving a goal

I admit immediately that I was one of the persons who helped to form Umkhonto we Sizwe, and that I played a prominent role in its affairs until I was arrested in August 1962. In the statement which I am about to make, I shall correct certain false impressions which have been created by State witnesses; amongst other things I will demonstrate that certain of the acts referred to in the evidence were not, and could not have been committed by Umkhonto. I will also deal with the relationship between the African National Congress and with the part which I personally have played in the affairs of both organisations. I shall deal also with the part played by the Communist Party. In order to explain these matters properly, I will have to explain what Umkhonto set out to achieve; what methods it prescribed for the achievement of these objects, and why these methods were chosen. I will also have to explain how I came, I became involved in the activities of these organisations - Nelson Mandela

This is an exact copy of the first paragraph from Nelson Mandela's "I am prepared to die" speech. He discuss' his past and takes responsibility for his previous actions. This speech was performed in front of thousands of people. I think he was very courageous
