Students will receive an overview of US health policy and policymaking processes in this course. The course will cover public health initiatives to improve health and health equity as well as local, state, and federal legislation related to health care (such as Medicare and Medicaid). The course discusses the factors that influence the U.S. health care system and health policies, as well as the federal and state health policy processes, using an interdisciplinary active learning approach. Additionally, it gives students the chance to study and practice health policy analysis techniques in order to solve certain public health issues.

The class include many presentations and class discussions rather than the professor lecturing. The course throughout this semester was set up as a flipped classroom meaning our class time was focused on presentations or papers. While doing this, our class time was used to ask the professor questions. During the semester there were presentations based off policies, debates focused on siding with or against bills, and also policy analysis. The policy analysis was the final project which students were given a data set to analyze and had to make recommendations based off of it.

For public health majors, an epidemiology and wellness class is a vital component of their education. Firstly, epidemiology serves as the cornerstone of public health, offering students essential tools to understand the distribution and determinants of health and disease within populations. By mastering epidemiological methods, students can identify risk factors, analyze disease patterns, and devise evidence-based strategies for disease prevention and health promotion. This knowledge forms the foundation for addressing pressing public health challenges and improving overall population health outcomes.

Additionally, integrating wellness concepts into the curriculum provides students with a holistic perspective on health. Learning about wellness goes beyond simply preventing disease; it encompasses physical, mental, and social well-being. By exploring the intersections between epidemiology and wellness, students gain a deeper understanding of the multifaceted nature of health and the diverse factors that influence it, from lifestyle choices to social and environmental determinants. Armed with this comprehensive understanding, public health majors are better equipped to tackle complex health issues and promote wellness within communities.
