         <title>The 54th Regiment (Black Soldiers) - Feb 1863</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>The 54th Regiment was the second all black union regiment to fight in the war.</li><li>While all of the soldiers in the regiment were black, the officers and leaders were still white. </li><li>Over 1000 men volunteered to be a part of this regiment. </li><li>Black soldiers got paid 3 dollars less than their white counterparts  </li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>

Sherman led 60,000 troops on a 285-mile march through Georgia.</li><li>They stole food, livestock, and burned barns and buildings of anyone who tried to fight back. </li><li>This was to try and convince Georgia to come back to the Union and let them experience how war would feel.</li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Battle of Vicksburg - May - July 1863</title>

Grant and Sherman's armies tried multiple times to attack Vicksburg, but was unsuccessful. <br>• The only Confederate position that Grant was able to capture was the Railroad Redoubt. <br>• Grant then turned the battle into a siege which lasted another 2 months. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Battle of Antietam - Sep 1862</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>• While on opposite side of a creek, the Union Army led by McClellan and Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army fought for 3 days. <br>• On the 18th, both sides ended up too bloody and wore out to continue. This was one of the bloodiest single days. <br>• Lee's army retreated on the 19th, allowing for the Union to claim the victory and served as a boost to Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which was issued a few days later. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>• Fort Sumter was the first battle of the Civil War. <br>• While trying to keep hold of the forts and federal places in the Confederate states, Lincoln tried to resupply forts with only necessary food and items, but no weapons or troops. <br>• After sending these supplies away once, the Confederate Army then decided to open fire on the fort and forced the Union to surrender and evacuate the fort.  </div>]]></description>

         <title>Surrender at Appomattox - April 1865</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>• General Lee attempted to attack the Union at Appomattox, but ended up out numbered and trapped. <br>• Even though he had previously denied all written requests by Grant to surrender, after being trapped Lee agreed to meet at the Appomattox Court House. <br>• On the afternoon of April 9th, Lee surrendered and three days later there was a formal ceremony and Lee's Army disbanded. This was the first of many Southern surrenders. </div>]]></description>

         <title>First Battle of Bull Run - July 1861</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>• Thinking that the Union had an easy fight on their hands, they were eager to fight with the Confederates. They ended up with about the same number of men on each side. <br>• While screaming their "rebel yell," the Confederate army charged the Union army and managed to break their line. The Confederates managed to win the battle, but was not able to follow after their retreating foes. <br>• The loss shocked the North and made them realize that the war would be much more difficult than they had originally thought. </div>]]></description>
