The Roman military went through a long decline that coexisted with declines of other types. The economic decline reduced military training programs, the soldiers couldn't carry armor and were easily taken down by invaders like the Huns, Vandals, and Goths.

Roman government had been in decline ever since the time of Julius Caesar. After the Pax Romana, however, the threads keeping the government together could not be hidden from public view, and they were severing. Emperors in the third century C.E. mainly died within 5 years of becoming emperor. The government lost money and was unable to use money. People lost their faith in the government, too.

As the government's strings started to sever, the economic gaps expanded drastically. Patricians gained more money as the Plebeians and slaves became poorer and poorer. The soil was over harvested and became infertile. Natural disasters were frequent and, since the government was weakened, people did not receive aid. The government overtaxed the people, leading to even more hatred towards the government.

As the ties that bound Rome together began splitting, the country's religious beliefs were changed. The old Roman gods were replaced with Christianity, and the morals of the average citizens and leaders changed. Emperors persecuted Christians and encouraged citizens to do the same. As the government declined, people wanted more for themselves and thought they could get away with it, leading to more crime. The people in the Roman empire were very angry with the government, due to less humanitarian aid and over taxation.
